Gauge Fields and Strings (Contemporary Concepts in Physics) Polyakov
CRC Press, 1987
From Ising To Gauge Fields and Strings
This book manifests the author's unique perspective on physics. The author claims that the profound aspect of quantum gauge fields is that they can almost be regarded as the theory of strings. These strings are in essence the Faraday flux lines. The deeper understanding of quantum physics ...

An Introduction to String Theory and D-Brane Dynamics Richard J. Szabo
World Scientific Publishing Company, 2004
Excellent Little Book
+ A little short but does its job.
This is a fabulous short introduction to string theory and the notion of "branes". It is clear and to the point, and hits on all the main ideas. Sure its not "complete" because of its small size, but its a good way to start sinking your teeth into string theory. Requires some background in quantum ...

Superstring Theory: Volume 2, Loop Amplitudes, Anomalies and Phenomenology (Cambridge Monographs on ... Michael B. Green, John H. Schwarz, ...
Cambridge University Press, 1988
A legendary text, by legends of the 'field'
+ Extensive coverage of phenomenology
This is a quintessential text for anyone who wishes to master the area of String Theory. I would say however it is not an introductory text but something one refers to after one has a rudimentary background in Quantum Field Theory as well as string theory; it is well written and contains a very ...

Superstring Theory: Volume 1, Introduction (Cambridge Monographs on Mathematical Physics) Michael B. Green, John H. Schwarz, ...
Cambridge University Press, 1988
Still the best
+ Classic Introduction + Should still be required reading
Why I still recommend this book rather than Polchinski's book is because this book presents more motivation and physics of string theory. In the 90s, there was string duality revolution, a side-effect of which is that string theorists neglect experiments.
