An Introduction to String Theory and D-Brane Dynamics Richard J. Szabo
World Scientific Publishing Company, 2004
Excellent Little Book
+ A little short but does its job.
This is a fabulous short introduction to string theory and the notion of "branes". It is clear and to the point, and hits on all the main ideas. Sure its not "complete" because of its small size, but its a good way to start sinking your teeth into string theory. Requires some background in quantum ...

Superstring Theory: Volume 1, Introduction (Cambridge Monographs on Mathematical Physics) Michael B. Green, John H. Schwarz, ...
Cambridge University Press, 1988
Still the best
+ Classic Introduction + Should still be required reading
Why I still recommend this book rather than Polchinski's book is because this book presents more motivation and physics of string theory. In the 90s, there was string duality revolution, a side-effect of which is that string theorists neglect experiments.

The Elegant Universe: Superstrings, Hidden Dimensions, and the Quest for the Ultimate Theory Brian Greene
Vintage Books, 2000
Essential For the Lay Person
+ Never trivial and readable + excellent introduction
Parts of this book weren't easy reading for me, but on the whole I found the book's in-depth explanations and desciptions well within my reach. A great read for anyone insterested in string theory, perhaps the most important theory of our time.
And yes, the book is well-written.

Introduction to Superstrings and M-Theory (Graduate Texts in Contemporary Physics) Michio Kaku
Springer, 1998
Superb Capture of superstrings
+ a "schaum's outline" of string theory + Decent but...
I enjoyed this book because it simply portrays how the univeral workings of the universe function. It makes you think just how many forms string can take and in this case, it's one large piece of string. Perhaps, we can use these pieces of string as a source of fuel to help us survive so that ...

Out of This World: Colliding Universes, Branes, Strings, and Other Wild Ideas of Modern Physics Stephen Webb
Springer, 2004
Great Work Webb!
+ Another enjoyable and informative read by Webb
Out of this World - Colliding Universes, Branes and other Wild Ideas of Modern Physics by Stephen Webb is a humble exercise in reminding one not to judge a book by its cover.
I was surprised by the difference between my initial judgment (by its title & cartoonish cover) and my evolving sense of ...

String Theory (2 Volume Set) (Cambridge Monographs on Mathematical Physics) Joseph Polchinski
Cambridge University Press, 1998
Great value
+ a thorough introduction
This 2 volume set is truly a great deal, since it probably is the best book on the subject. The first volume introduces the bosonic string thoroughly. There are problem sections in each chapter, but no answers. At the end of the book, there is a list of key concepts, which makes finding related ...

Our Superstring Universe: Strings, Branes, Extra Dimensions and Superstring-M Theory Jr. L. E. Lewis
iUniverse, Inc., 2003
Much better than expected.
This book is very well written and it gets right down to the point. It is, also, very clear in concept with only a few points here and there that might have needed a better explanation. This is only an introductory edition, and if more in-depth knowledge is needed I recommend: The Elegant Universe ...
