excellent Amazon Purchase

I ordered this not knowing if it would arrive in time for Christmas but it did and I was very pleased by this. Also the DVD was excellently packaged and the receiver of the gift was very happy.

Both versions for one low price!

I have wanted to own all the episodes of the original series of Star Trek for quite some time. I noticed that the prices for the dvd releases of this series are ridiculously expensive at or about $100 per season. I found that I was also torn between which version to get, either the original production or the new re-mastered "Lucasfied" version. I then came across this product right here on Amazon in Blu-ray for a fraction of the cost. I quickly realized that with the purchase of a Blu-ray drive (LITE-ON iHOS104) I could finally start a blu-ray collection and begin it with the entire collection of Star Trek the original series (BOTH VERSIONS!!!) for less money then what the dvd sets would cost. A NO BRAINER!

In Full HD, the video is astonishing; the color, blacks and detail of these episodes makes this set on blu-ray a must own for any fan. Every episode can be watched with its original special effects or the newly redone (Lucasfied) version. Each version is re-mastered with amazing visual clarity and quality.

The ONLY downfall is the audio, I am no expert but it seems that the studio cut some serious corners in this aspect. The volume levels for the 8 channel audio are unbalanced. Voices seem to come only from the left front while effects come from the right and the score comes from the center... to correct this one must tweak the control panel for their system or simply place the audio to the optional original broadcast mono. I have settled for the mono as this is still a phenomenal audio presentation.

Good Season of Trek. Great Blu ray deal!

This is considered the worst season of TOS but the first two seasons were outstanding so its unfair to compare it to them. It is still better than most of what is out there on TV today. This looks incredible on Blu ray. Don't knock this season until you see it. But I definitely recommend it to Trek fans. Finish your collection cause I KNOW you already have seasons 1 & 2.

Climax and Falling Action....

While the Original Series hit its peak in the Second Season, that's not to say there isn't anything to enjoy in Season Three. Sure, Shatner's Rug looks terrible. Sure, the tunics aren't velour anymore. Sure, as a whole, the writing isn't what it once was, but we still get gem's like 'Spectre of the Gun' and 'The Empath'. We're introduced to Michael Ansara's Kang and a new hairstyle for Jimmy Doohan. Any real Trek fan who makes the active choice to buy the Original Series on Blu-Ray ain't gonna give a rat's ass ('tribble's ass' just wasn't worth it) about Season Three's short-comings. It becomes an obsessive/compulsive necessity to round out your collection.
