Winner of the Audience Award for Best Documentary at the Seattle Interntional Film Festival, Dan Karslake's provocative, entertaining documentary brilliantly reconciles homosexuality and Biblical scripture, and in the process reveals that Church-sanctioned anti-gay bias is based solely upon a significant (and often malicious) misinterpretation of the Bible. As the film notes, most Christians live their lives today without feeling obliged to kil anyone who works on the Sabbath or eats shrimp.
Through the experience of five very normal, very Christian , very American families - including those of former House Majority Leader Richard Gephardt and Episcopalian Bishop Gene Robinson - we discover how insightful people of faith handle the realization of having a gay child. With commentary by such respected voices as Bishop Desmond Tutu, Harvard's Peter Gomes, Orthodox Rabbi Steve Greenberg and Reverend Jimmy Creech, For The Bible Tells Me So offers healing, clarity and understanding to anyone caught in the crosshairs of scripture and sexual identity.

A VERY IMPORTANT DOCUMENTARY!!!!

I must admit that for most of my life, I have been homphobic. Homophobia is especially prevelant in the African-American community that I am a part of, even though almost everyone I know can name at least one gay person in their family or circle of friends. I grew up taking the Bible literally and I was always taught that homosexuality was one of the most heinous sins - an abomination. Now I am older and after studying the Bible very carefully, especially the Old Testament, I have realized that we Christians have a bad habit of reading the Bible selectively and cherry-picking verses of Scripture to fit an agenda. This is one thing that this documentary shows very well. For instance, as shown in the clip from the "West Wing", the Bible sanctions slavery, subordination of women, and demands that anyone who works on the Sabbath (no exceptions) be stoned to death..Why don't we do these things anymore? Why do we ignore these commands (don't eat shrimp, stoning to death of women who lose their viginity before marriage etc)? We do so because we acknowledge that you have to read the Bible in its full context and such laws would be unnacaptable in today's culture...We realize that no one really obeys every letter of the law in the Bible. It was not until I found out in recent years that a dear friend of mine who is married and in the ministry was struggling with his sexual identity (something that he knew even before he married his wife, but he thought marriage would "cure" him)that I started to have empathy for homosexuals and their struggle. I must admit that I am still conflicted about the issue, because the Bible makes it clear that it is wrong, but there is so much other stuff in the Bible that we don't take literally so why do we hone on this one issue? This documentary provides some great incites as to why..

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS DOCUMENTARY SPECIALLY TO PEOPLE IN THE MINISTRY. YOU MAY NOT AGREE WITH ALL THE CONCLUSIONS, BUT YOU WILL BE TOUCHED BY THE HUMANITY OF THE FAMILES AND THEIR STRUGGLE. THE BOTTOM LINE IS THAT EVEN IF WE AMEND THE CONSTITUTION TO BAN GAY MARRIAGE, THIS WILL NOT HALT THE REALITY OF GAY PEOPLE EXISTING IN OUR CHURCHES AND YES, IN OUR FAMILIES.

For So Great A Treasure, Words Will Never Do!

I had heard about this film last year and was eagerly awaiting it's arrival in Chicago [before I moved]. I was finally able to see it. I was moved and blessed by every aspect of this film. I've been showing it to my parents and to friends hoping to change minds and move hearts. Thankfully, it's working.

There have been a few criticisms that it's a bit one sided, and you know what, it's true. It's true because this is a film that's only being told by one side of the equation, so naturally, it will only be the opinions, beliefs and feelings of those who have continually felt the negative effects of bigoted Christianity in their lives. It's not the filmmakers job to be completely balanced, not every story is fair. Surely, what the men and women went through in this film wasn't fair, so to chide the film for not being completely fair to Christianity is a bit insulting to the integrity of the entire piece.

God is God

I will not speak about the pain so beautifully portrayed nor the compelling logic of the author's view; neither will I touch on the subtlety of the intimate feelings expressed. Instead, I would only express the reverence I feel for what we have come to call 'believers.' Only God knows whether we have even correctly understood the questions presented, I can only say that as a Christian I am pleased and moved to see and hear Christians wrestle with what may or may not be right.

An important documentary

For anyone who wants to understand the realities of the bible in regards to what it does or doesn't say about homosexuality - this is a must see video. Period.
