The Great Depression hits home for nine-year-old Kit Kittredge when her dad loses his business and leaves to find work. Oscar nominee* Abigail Breslin stars as Kit, leading a splendid cast in the first-ever American Girl theatrical movie. In order to keep their home, Kit and her mother must take in boarders paying houseguests who turn out to be full of fascinating stories. When mothers lockbox containing all their money is stolen, Kits new hobo friend Will is the prime suspect. Kit refuses to believe that Will would steal, and her efforts to sniff out the real news get her and her friends into big trouble. The police say the robbery was an inside job, committed by someone they knew. So if it wasnt Will, then who did it?

Great for all ages

The entire family watched it - 5, 9 and 10 year olds plus parents - unanimous hit!

7 Year Old Loves It

Bought this for my daughter who just turned 7. It had great historical value, beautiful costuming, the perfect cast. My daughter, who has never been apart of any financial conversation with her parents, did have alot of questions about our financial status after that movie. The movie is based upon the Great Depression and she was afraid that it may be currently happening in our society. We had to have some serious conversations after that. It was a lovely movie, but it taught her alot.

a good anchor for the books

This movie is exceptionally well done, much better than I expected and much better than the usual movies geared to children without any silliness sometimes found in media targeted to young girls. This is also a good way to introduce learning about The Great Depression.

bad comedy at the end - I was disappointed

We expected this film about Kit during big depression to be at least as good as other American girl movies. We were greatly disappointed - all people from my family including my 9 years old daughter. We were hoping that the movie would tell more or less a real story of the big depression - so similar to the great recession which we have now (2010). The beginning was good. It showed Kit's family and her friends experiencing the signs of depression and dealing with it. It showed the school and kids trying to aprehend what it is about.

The plot of stealing the money and jewelry, the magician, monkey man and the librarian become such a farce that all the other aspects of movie are completely lost. This gives a very bad impression on the rest of the film. The bad comedy at the end spoils it all!

Nice Solid Story

My "American Girl" went to the theater with Grandma to watch this, so this was the first viewing I had. I liked it, not to sappy, strong charactures all around a good flick.
