Helped me out so much...

For 80 minutes worth, this by far is one of the best bellydance instructional dvds for the absolute beginner. Michelle is a great teacher, a great dancer, she is kind and encouraging but at the same time you can tell she is serious is about what she teaches, she speaks in a clear, professional tone and voice, explains things slowly and carefully, and always gets to the point of things. She starts off with these excellent warm-up exercises and yoga-type conditioning, then begins to break down basic movements, moves on to some not-so basic movements, puts all the movements together, and teaches you 2 pre-shimmy drills. Plus the music and bellydance performance at the end by Zaheea is priceless. I highly recommend purchasing her "Perfect Hips" along with her "Pop, Lock, & Shimmy" as it is truly intermediat level. Also, it would be a good idea to also purachese "Drills, Drills, Drills" and "Body By Bellydance" as it teaches layering techniques and some more advanced layer combos, plus finger cymbals! Enjoy!

Good belly dance DVD, learn by yourself

If you want to practice belly dance by yourself at home, this one is easy to follow.


Michelle is a GREAT Teacher

This is a great beginners belly dance workout as well as a good introduction to basic moves. Michelle is warm, friendly, and encouraging but she does point out more than once that you really need to *work* to make the moves look effortless. Her positioning in front of the mirror is innovative and makes her easy to follow; sometimes, it really helps to see a move from two different angles to get a better idea of how it's done.

This DVD is broken into numerous segments, including a warm up, core conditioning, a breakdown of the moves (with time to practice each one), movement practice (very basic dances using the moves you've just learned), advanced practice, a cool down, and more. One of the things I actually like about this video is that during the segment called "Putting It All Together," Michelle doesn't cue. I think that this is a *good* thing because it feels more like dancing and less like an aerobics class. (This was one of my primary complaints about the belly dance DVDs developed specifically for workouts.)

Another great thing about Michelle is the way she breaks down explanations of moves. For example, with "Figure Eights" she explains that not only do you bend and straighten your knee to get the hip to circle, but you also need to really push out with your hip to get the move to look right. Her explanation of how to do snake arms is also the only one that's ever worked for me. I've taken a couple classes and they didn't help as much as her simple explanation. She always seemed to remind me to open my chest or tuck my pelvis or tighten my abs right when I was getting sloppy - obviously, she has some teaching experience! Best of all, she drills you nice and slow on the moves too - not only do the muscles burn, but they also learn.

There are a lot of moves on this DVD, more than I learned in the three weeks of classes I took (before moving here, where there are no local tribal instructors.) Speaking of tribal, the basics covered in this DVD are a great foundation for any belly dance form, from cabaret to ATS to tribal fusion. I'm very pleased with this purchase, and I'll be buying more of Michelle's DVDs.

beginning bellydancing

I feel this is a great video for those just beginning to bellydance. The only downfall would be that you cant forward to different sections. You have to watch it virtually all the way through even if you only want to practice a certain move

VERY PLEASED WITH THIS BEGINNERS VIDEO. I HAVE NO EXPERIENCE AT ALL AND THIS VIDEO WAS EASY TO FOLLOW. GREAT STARTING POINT
