When the Pink Panther, largest diamond in the world, is stolen from the Lugash Museum, Clouseau is called upon to retrieve it. This infuriates his superior, Dreyfus (Herbert Lom), who believes Clouseau to be a nincompoop and wants to throw him off the force. Dreyfus decides to tail him and catch him red-handed in an idiotic act. Meanwhile, retired jewel theif Sir Charles Litton (Christopher Plummer) discover he's the main suspect in the case and realizes that the only way to avoid prison is to catch the real thief himself. The chase is on from Nice to Gstaad to Lugash, as clever Clouseau dips deeply into his bag of disguises to snare the culprit.
