The pentax DSmobile 600 scanner is quick and simple to use while on the road. A great light in weight scanner to help the busy executive like me. The cost is good too.

Mediocre Mac Support, But It'll Get You There

I am using this product on a Mac, so I had to go to their site, download the Mac-compatible TWAIN driver, install that, then find a program that I could use it in. Preview doesn't work for me, so I end up loading Photoshop just to do a scan. I usually either get a black bar at the top of my scan, or else it cuts off the top few millimeters of what I'm scanning, but you can clean that up since you're already in Photoshop.

I wish there was some Mac OCR software available, and perhaps that it even had some simple direct to PDF or something just for basic needs. Obviously this isn't a "workhorse" scanner, so there are some assumptions that could be made.

Regardless, it's a decent quality scanner, and really is tiny. I can throw this in my suitcase on business trips and know that I always have a scanner handy in case I need to scan/fax something. I really like that it's USB-powered as well, that just saves space and is really smart.

DSmobile 600

Nice compact scanner that works off usb power source. Software interface is decent and most important to me the scanner gave me no problems with my new laptop with Windows Vista operating system. My primary use is for scanning paper into Nuance's Paperport 11 Professional which I have installed on my computer. The only issue I have with the scanner is that the default back ground color is black for all areas which do not see a paper image. A small receipt for example might give a 8 x 11.5 image which is totally black except for the actual receipt scanned. This is some what annoying in that if you want to print the image you have to crop it to original size to eliminate all of the black background. Paperport has an auto crop setting which will eliminate the background, but the scanner software it self does not.

Nice hardware, rudimentary software

I bought this scanner primarily for scanning receipts submitted for reimbursement. I read a fair number of online reviews before selecting this model. It appeared from those reviews that the Neat Receipts had more reliability problems.

The scanner has worked well for the few weeks that I've had it. The software, however, is rather rudimentary. The biggest annoyance is that you must set the scan page size in advance. There's no support to have it shut off at the end of the paper being scanned. And there's no support to trim the scanned image to the size of the paper after the scan.

I contacted Pentax technical support through their website, inquiring about the API of the driver, but received no reply. This is a major disappointment to me. I hoped to be able to write some more capable scanning software.

So, while this scanner has worked very well, I'm reluctant to recommend it.

Very Good Product but Waiting for Vista Software CD

I had to send for the CD with Vista compatible software so I'm not going to talk about that yet. I'm hoping that it'll work for both 32-bit and 64-bit Vista. I need both. Some old reviews on this topic weren't very positive. I suspect things have changed by now. This forum needs more on Vista support for the product.

I set up this scanner from the CD in the box on my XP machine. I was scanning and using its entire suite of capabilities, which are many, in about 10 minutes. The built-in scanning to PDF is easy and makes good "copies" with no hassle. Getting the material to be scanned to line up properly takes some practice but this isn't needed for 90% of what I do. I was also able to scan into my Twain compatible applications with zero effort. This is much better than other products I've tried to use that were "Twain" compatible. I am especially happy about how good the scans of photographs come out and how easy ot is to adjust scan area to match the size of the item to be scanned. Super "ilities" product for portability, capability, felxibility, and capability.
