The
Polk
Audio
SurroundBar
is designed to complete your High Definition TV experience. It's the perfect match for flat-panel and shallow screen TVs. And it works with any surround sound receiver. Polk's patented SDA Surround technology means there's no need to install rear
speaker
s. SDA Surround creates a completely immersive experience, as if there were dozens of speakers all around you. This technology is based on fundamental research into the way our ears process sound and perceive the direction of sounds. The SurroundBar works in any room, SDA Surround is not dependent on your room's walls to produce the surround effect. It uses a patented combination of signal processing and acoustical geometry that complements the spacing between your ears to produce surround sound without the need for rear mounted speakers. Since the SurroundBar works directly with the hearing mechanism and requires no special room characteristics, it can deliver a room-filling surround experience in nearly any location in almost any type of room.Installation versatility is designed in. You can wall mount the SurroundBar right below your flat-panel TV. Or use the included cradle on a TV stand, a shelf or for set-top placement. The Polk Audio SurroundBar is a welcome addition for anyone who wants all the thrills of surround sound... but none of the hassles. The SurroundBar is simple to set up. The conductor cable is color-coded and clearly marked for easy hookup, even your kids can do it.

Perfect solution for small place; flexibility for future use
I purchased the
SurroundBar
and
Polk
Audio
PSW10 10-Inch Monitor Series Powered Subwoofer (
Single
,
Black
). Both units are connected to theOnkyo TX-SR505 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black) and sound great. The SurroundBar produces a very clean, sharp sound and can handle high volume without any distortions. It does create a surround sound feel; however, as mentioned by some other reveiws, it is hard to pinpoint the exact location of the "phantom" side
speaker
s.
I live in a one bedroom apartment in New York, and the SurroundBar is a perfect home theater solution for renters. No need for wires going across the room or through the dry wall.
I did look at the Yamaha sound projector (YSP-900), which is a cheaper option since it has a built-in amplifier; however, the added simplicity reduces further utilization options. Once you move to a bigger living space, with the Polk setup you can keep the SurroundBar as a solution for a smaller room, and then use a receiver and Subwoofer for a true 5.1 or 7.1 set. With the Yamaha, you are just stuck with the sound bar.
Bottom line: Polk offers quality, simplicity, and flexibility for future use at a competitive price.

Great surround sound
When I moved into a new house I could not hook up my Bose lifestyle 35
system
properly--no place to put the rear
speaker
s, and the Bose system had no HDMI. So I looked at and listened to some of the "surround" systems with only speakers in the front. The size and performance of the
Polk
was better and much less expensive than the rest. I use an Onkyo AV unit and a Velo subwoofer together with the Polk and I am very satisfied.
Great!
It works great setup is sooo easy. But you 'll need a subwoofer.
Gets the job done
I'll be short and sweet, it sounds good, not great. It does look great and really cleans up a room. If you want something that comes close to a 5.1 surround experience in a 1
speaker
package I would recommend it. It's more like 3.1 with allot of ambiance. I did already have a 5.1 receiver and a decent subwoofer. If I had to purchase them on top of the speaker, I might have looked at the Yamaha solutions. I bought an open box that ended up being about 75% off MSRP so for that price it certainly was a great deal. I still have my full 7.1
system
boxed up for when my 10 month old grows up a bit and stops trying to knock the floor standing speakers over, but for now this certainly fits the bill.

Decent
Just bought this for $433 at J&R, with free shipping. They matched the best price I found on Amazon -- I went through them because I had some store credit I needed to use.
For $433, I guess this is worth it. It does eliminate the clutter of the bulky HTIB
speaker
s from the Onkyo HT-SR800 I had been using. However, this speaker is far from providing my living room with anything close to resembling "surround sound". It is better than the center speaker that came with my original set up -- and that's basically how I looked at it: It's a REALLY good replacement for an average center channel speaker. If you like to play music, you are probably going to want to route a different set of towers through your "B" output and leave it to them for playing your tunes, as this thing isn't really capable of producing good sound quality for music (flat, thin, distorted, etc). Also, as usual, it comes with super thin, crappy speaker wire -- just go ahead and buy yourself some 16 gauge simultaneously if you plan on getting this.
As for movies, it does a pretty good job of producing a solid range of sound. It is definitely more dynamic than your average speaker, but again I don't think it lives up to its claim of being a do-it-all surround component. I play blu-ray through a PS3, and have a 47 inch LG LCD flat screen HDTV @ 1080p, and I can't say I am too let down playing GTA IV or watching Blu-Ray Planet Earth discs. Also, the speaker looks awesome in front of my tv, unlike the Onkyo center speaker.
Polk
seems to always do a good job with the aesthetic.
If you can get it for 400 or less, and you want to eliminate clutter from ugly HTIB speakers, go for it. Just don't expect the same sound you would get from placing speakers all over the place, because you won't get it with this.
