In the sequel to The Abominable Dr. Phibes, Vincent Price returns as the organ playing, hideously scarred, inventive killer risen from the grave to resurrect his long dead wife. You see, at the end of the first movie, we merely thought he was dead. In reality, he was just put into a state of "suspended animation." Well, he's back and as monstrously clever in his murders as before. The sequel finds Phibes traveling to Egypt where his murders take on more of a curse of the mummy quality. It turns out that Phibes has acquired a copy of an Egyptian tome that imparts the knowledge required to bring his wife back from the dead, so he's off to the land of pyramids and lost tombs to do the deed. Of course, he can't get out of England without an interesting murder involving snakes and a booby trapped phone, which sets the British police on his trail again. Phibes is accompanied to Egypt by his mute but lovely companion Vulnavia. The first Vulnavia was destroyed in The Abominable Dr. Phibes, but the new one is equally as murderous and as attractive. One of the best death scenes in the film begins with Vulnavia seducing a less than bright pursuer into a cleverly designed scorpion shaped torture device. Once the amorous nave is safely trapped with death eminent, she and the bad doctor retire to a well outfitted tent where Phibes pheeds her grapes. B-movie death sequences just don't get better than this. The entire movie takes Phibes' deliciously campy murder spree to new levels and does it with a very wry sense of humor. The movie is so laced with self mockery that at times it borders on the farcical. All humor aside, the script and cast of Phibes do a fantastic job.
