One of the Best Miniseries Ever

This miniseries, adapted from the novels of John Jakes, is one of the best ever. It tells the story of two families, the Hazards of Pennsylvania and the Mains of South Carolina, as they live through the turbulent events of mid-nineteenth century America.

Book I deals with the events starting in 1842 leading up to the Civil War, and Book II deals with the war itself, from 1861 to 1865.

"North and South" teaches positive lessons. The protagonists in the miniseries embody friendship, courage, loyalty, honor, and strength. It also takes a realistic view of the two sections of the country. It does not take a "North good, South bad" point of view. Throughout, it shows that there were good people as well as scoundrels on both sides of the Mason-Dixon line--to name one example, there were people ambivalent about slavery in the South, and there were greedy war profiteers in the North.

Book Three was televised years after the first two (in 1994, while the first two were shown in the mid-'80s) and did not even come close to living up to the standards of Books I and II. However, the first two books are unforgettable and should be seen by everyone who loves American history.

Far better than I imagined

So many stories on the American Civil War I didnt expect this to be much.
Turned out to be so much more and I really enjoyed it. If anything it probably ran a little too long with the second book Heaven and Hell included which couldnt live up to the first.
The two leads were solid and the story line also.

books 1 and 2 good...skip book 3

North and South is a 1980s soap opera miniseries set during the Civil War. It's about how the war affects two families - The Hazards from the North and the Mains from the South. Books 1 and 2 of the series are excellent. I recommend seeing them.

I gave my review 4 stars because of Book 3. It was filmed a decade later, in the 1990s. It is set after the Civil War has ended. The production is not up to the same caliber as Books 1 and 2 and the plot has too many continuity errors. I recommend skipping this one.
