AMERICAN
DREAMER
, frustrated housewife and writer Cathy Palmer enters a mystery-writing contest and wins an all-expense-paid trip to Paris. Once there, she is struck by a car and awakens believing that she is Rebecca Ryan, the heroine in a wild spy adventure.
American Dreamer
"The most important thing, kid, is that you're doing something you like to do."
Housewife Cathy Palmer enters a writing contest, and wins a trip to Paris to meet the author of her favorite series. Shortly after her arrival, an accident causes her to develop amnesia. When she awakens in the hospital, she thinks she is Rebecca Ryan, the protagonist from the story contest. She's convinced that the author's son, Alan, is Rebecca's sidekick, Dimitri. Soon she's unwittingly embroiled herself and Alan in Parisian intrigue. Plot twists will keep you guessing until the very end.
Jobeth Williams plays plain, discontented housewife Cathy Palmer, and sexy, international spy Rebecca Ryan with equal ease.
Tom Conti is engaging and funny as the baffled Alan/Dimitri, who allows himself to be dragged into the adventure by the beautiful woman who charges her way into his life.
I first saw this film in the theater, when I was a high school sophomore. At the time, I thought Rebecca Ryan ruled. 20+ years later, I still love this movie. Silly and utterly unrealistic, I still laugh out loud each time I watch it.

A great afternoon romp
I looked for years for this film.
American
Dreamer
speaks to the dreamer in us all. An unhappy housewife with dreams of a more glamorous life who accidentally creates her dream life after suffering a blow to the head. Mass confusion and a cliche ending that works with instead of against the movie ensue. Intrigue, excitement and a wonderful new wardrobe, who wouldn't want to be Rebecca Ryan for a day.
American Dreamer
Since this is one of my all time favorite movies, I was delighted to finally be able to purchase it on DVD! I absolutely love this movie! Even though I know what is going to happen, I laugh every time I watch it again.
JoBeth Williams and Tom Conti are delightful in it.

An oddball romantic comedy
"
American
Dreamer
" is one of my wife's favorite movies. She's seen it time and again and finally convinced me to sit down and watch it with her. I'm glad she did. It's an oddball sort of silly romp through Paris with JoBeth Williams and Tom Conti that gave me some chuckles and a few laughs. I was reminded of another movie I saw a long time ago called "Romancing the Stone" with Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner. Anyway, I recommend this movie to anyone who just wants to be entertained for one and one half hours...it's a pleasant way to spend your time.
American Dreamer - an oldie but goodie
It's dated, but a fun-loving, action packed romantic comedy. The actors seem to have fun with their roles and overall it continues to entertain. Safe for the whole family~!
