The elders of
Okinawa
, Japan, are among the leanest and longest-
live
d people on earth. These Okinawans--many in their eighties, nineties, and beyond--maintain an unprecedented quality of life. More than any other population, older
Okinawans are slim and agile, and their minds are clear and lucid. Few suffer the lifestyle-related diseases like heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and obesity that are so common in their western counterparts.
In their New York Times bestseller The Okinawa Program, Drs. Bradley and Craig Willcox and Makoto Suzuki shared important insights about these unique and amazingly healthy people from their landmark twenty-five-year Okinawa Centenarian Study. The latest findings from that study are proving even more surprising: the elders do not gain weight with age.
The secrets behind this discovery are twofold: the Okinawans' calorie-light
diet
and their active lifestyle, which results in
leaner
and more "metabolically efficient" bodies that stay slimmer, healthier, and more youthful as they age. In The Okinawa Diet
Plan
, Drs. Willcox, Willcox, and Suzuki adapt traditional Okinawan dietary principles for a delicious blend of East and West so that anyone can reap these very same benefits. The authors' Caloric Density Index and the Caloric Density Pyramid, developed from the study's latest findings, debunk the myths of trendy diet gurus and provide a revolutionary approach to eating, health, weight loss, and weight maintenance that is easy to follow and simple to maintain. This approach allows Okinawans to eat more food than the typical American diet, and still weigh less--and you can too. With more than 150 delicious recipes that incorporate foods low in caloric density, The Okinawa Diet Plan offers dozens of satisfying meal options. Conveniently divided into three tracks--western, eastern, and fusion--and with healthy options for both ve
get
arians and meat eaters alike, their program provides all the benefits of calorie restriction without deprivation. With dietary guidelines, cooking techniques, an eight-week turnaround plan, and other unique resources, The Okinawa Diet Plan is a breakthrough concept in healthy weight loss and maintenance.

A Research-Based Plan for Achieving Healthy Weight Loss
We are currently working on programs to help people achieve better health. Unlike most eating
plan
s, the OK
diet
guidelines on based the latest research on the relationship between the types of foods eaten and the long term effects on health. Our test subjects have maintained lower LDL cholesterol and trigyclerides, healthy waist circumferences, and lower body fats for more than 1 year, by using our healthy eating and exercise programs, which are based on the guidelines recommended by the authors. I highly recommend both this book and their previous one, The
Okinawa
Program.

No gimmicks, this works!
The concept of eating foods lower in energy density is something that I found out through Barbara Rolls excellent book, The Volumetrics Eating
Plan
. This is another great book that I would recommend in addition to the
Okinawa
Diet
Plan, because it is full of great recipes for Western style tastes. It also includes energy density and a complete nutritional breakdown for each recipe. If you are following a plan like Weight Watchers, both books will fill you with ideas to make meal times more filling and more interesting.
Not all Soy is Created Equally
I'm no expert. But, I am Chinese. My family and I thrive on Asian-made soy products such as tofu. We are allergic to western-made soy products. If someone can provide a plausible reason for this, I would be most interested. (Except where those Asian-made soy products are imported from Communist China. I would recommend soy products from Taiwan. I am most concerned about unscrupulous manufacturing processes from Communist China.)
I cannot speak for soy products made here in the U.S. So, beware of all recommendations for or warnings against soy products. I believe not all soy is created equally.

Interesting book if you're into nutrition
This is a very good book with good recipes. I think you need to be interested in nutrition and
diet
to find it a good read. However, considering the average American diet, perhaps it should be a required text in all high schools. Some of the recipes call for ingredients that are difficult to find unless you
live
in an area with a large Japanese population.
