The title role of Donizetti's most popular opera was for many years the province of coloratura sopranos. More recently, the dramatic aspects of the role have attracted sopranos with larger, darker voices. Among the most celebrated is Renata Scotto whose Lucia has been acclaimed in many of the great opera houses.
