Another Lee Marvin Triumph

I saw this movie some years ago, but I still remember some of the great comedy. I really liked the cast with Lee Marvin as the Great Scout and Robert Culp (one of my favorites) as his adversary, along with Strother Martin and a great performance from Oliver Reed as Joe Knox a rather unusual Native American. The story takes place in the first decade of the 20th century. The most sympathetic character is played by Kay Lenz, who is Cathouse Thursday, an accident of naming by Oliver Reed's character Joe Knox who steals a police wagon full of prostitutes who were just arrested in a raid on a house of ill repute. Lee Marvin plays some of the comedy but also is a straight man for Oliver Reed's Joe Knox. There were some really funny moments in this movie and I would watch it in a minute if it were to be on. I'm not sure why the VHS is nearly 30 bux. Like another of my favorites Revelations with Ellen Burstyn, I think if old used VHS tapes can command these kinds of prices, someone should be jumping at the chance to get the movies on DVD.

F-Troop Without the Cavalry

I purchased this video for the lovely and talented Kay Lenz, and found the funny story to be a plus. The movie has a wacky, drive-in feel, and to ride along is a lot of fun. Lee Marvin is very funny and holds the story together as he and Oliver Reed's characters try to claim their share of a gold strike from a crooked politician.

The surprise hit of the film is Reed, who plays Native American, "Joe Knox". Reed rarely goes overboard in the film, and is truly hilarious at times. Kay Lenz is a sweetheart as "Thursday", and displays a perfect blend of tenderness, comedy, and cuteness. Her 'morning after' scene with Marvin contains similarities to her wonderful film, "Breezy", and her seduction scene with Robert Culp is a highlight of the film. The look on the group's faces when she returns with the horses and supplies they need after her night with Culp is priceless.

The film's conclusion is a page out of "The Sting", and a funny ending the viewer was hoping for. The movie won't win any awards, but is still a fun ride for those that enjoy comedies from the mid-70's.
