The combination of choleric, combustible Oliver Hardy and mild, perpetually helpful Stan Laurel sustained dozens upon dozens of comedies, including the popular Way Out West. What makes this hour-long feature stand out is not just the physical hijinks (of which there are plenty), but the moments of surprising elegance, like a supple soft-shoe duet accompanied by what can only be called cowboy doo-wop. The plot concerns keeping the deed to a gold mine out of the hands of a greedy saloonkeeper (frequent comic foil James Finlayson), but it's just a pretext for gleeful slapstick orchestrations. Laurel & Hardy II also includes the underrated Block-Heads, another hour-long feature which starts out in the trenches of World War I and ends in a 13th floor apartment in New York; domestic strife and even lost limbs become fodder for jokes, yet the movie never feels cruel or ghoulish. It's the lightheartedness of their brutal mishaps that marks their success. Both features are from the late 1930s. An additional short from 1931, Chickens Come Home, features Hardy running for mayor and trying to squelch his past indiscretions, with Laurel as his right-hand man. No matter the circumstances, they wear bowler hats; wherever they go, madcap devastation follows. --Bret Fetzer

Do Not Pay $80 - Available Elsewhere

Because this wonderful DVD is no longer available new through Amazon, some sellers are trying to con people into paying $80 or more for Laurel & Hardy II. I just bought the same DVD yesterday for six dollars through Columbia House. It is also still available at K-Mart for less than $10. Don't get ripped off.

Two of the best Laurel and Hardys of all time - Way out West and Block heads - loads of laughs and fun. A must for any Laurel and Hardy fan.

Laurel & Hardy II review.

I think that these three movies were some of their best comedy. The pictures were good quality. However there was one slight problem: the speech and the lip motion were not quite in sync with each other on some DVD players. The sound was very good.

Very funny family entertainment for all ages,this type of humor is never out of date.

Good, but could be better

Well Hallmark is certainly taking their sweet time issuing these DVDs! At least they're releasing the cream of the Laurel & Hardy crop. This volume contains what I would rate as their second best feature, "Way Out West" (their best, "Sons of the Desert" was released on the first volume). This and the other feature, "Block-Heads", have good soundtracks and decent pictures though it is not quite as cleaned up as it could be. The one short on this volume, "Chickens Come Home" suffers from a soundtrack in very poor condition. Still, some L&H is better than none at all!
