Dr. Shapiro Brings Reality to Weight Loss
I have been a fan of Dr.
Shapiro
's "
Picture
Perfect
"
weight
loss
concept for several years for the simple reason that he brings weight loss out of the land of mystery and back down to reality. Because, with the exception of the unlucky few who have real medical problems that inhibit weight loss, losing weight really is a choice - or a series of choices made from the moment you wake up to the moment you go to sleep. Choices between a large, high-calorie, high-fat breakfast pastry, and a small, low-fat muffin and a large bowl of fresh fruit. Between roasted, rosemary new potatoes and French fries. Between getting up 30 minutes earlier to walk and pushing snooze until the last possible moment.
What Dr. Shapiro's books try to do is show you (literally - with pictures) how your every
day
food choices can impact your weight, and how just choosing healthier, but still tasty, substitutes for your favorite foods can not only fill you up but also lead to weight loss. The picture comparisons are really powerful and may shock you.
What I like about the 30 day
Plan
book versus the original Picture Perfect Weight Loss book is, in fact, the 30-day eating plan. The original book basically just provides the picture comparisons, and I need more direction than that in planning my daily menus. I also enjoy the "success stories" from the Chicago firemen (and others), which provide extra motivation to stick with the plan and proof that it really works.
Another great aspect about Dr. Shapiro's plan is that it is VEGETARIAN-FRIENDLY. As a vegetarian, there are so few of the popular diet plans that are doable, particularly in the age of low carb (a la Atkins), and now smart carb (a la South Beach). One caution is that Dr. Shapiro does rely on a lot of processed soy products for his vegetarian dishes, and while I am not a doctor (and he is), there is sufficient controversy over the amount of soy one should eat to convince me to eat it (like everything else, really) in moderation - i.e., in one meal each day rather than both two or three. Just something to keep in mind.
The book does touch upon the importance of exercise, although this is definitely a diet-focused book. If you're looking for exercise specifics, I would recommend supplementing this book with another. But for those of you who want to have your cake and eat it too (albeit, a lower fat variety - perhaps angel food cake with fat-free Cool Whip and berries?), then I would HIGHLY recommend this book (along with Dr. Shapiro's Picture Perfect Cookbook - if you like to cook - and his Picture Perfect Prescription). This book will show you how to eat healthy and eat a lot (think Volumetrics), but make the right choices that will allow you to lose weight AND stick with the plan for a lifetime. And that's the hardest part on most of those other plans, isn't it? 5 stars for a diet plan that works and that lasts.
