In turn-of-the-century New York City midwife Sarah Brandt is again helping police Detective Sergeant Frank Malloy. This time, an arsonist is presumed to have murdered a wealthy industrialist in an explosion. But Sarah and Frank clash over whether the murder was politically motivated because-as she knows and he is about to discover-the marble facades of Fifth Avenue hide as many dark and twisted secrets as any tenement on the Lower East Side...

A great book from a great series

I first bought this book and then had to go back and get the rest of the series. It is a very well written series which gives a sort of feel for the history of the time/area with all the enjoyment of reading a mystery and not a history book.

6th entry in Gaslight Mystery series worth 4-1/2 stars

Murder on Marble Row by Victoria Thompson is the sixth installment in the Gaslight Mystery series starring midwife Sarah Brandt and Detective Sergeant Frank Malloy. While not as strong as the last entry, this is still a fascinating mystery. This time Malloy is ordered by Police Comissioner Teddy Roosevelt to look into the bombing of a wealthy industrialist, Gregory Van Dyke. Sarah, as usual, ends up helping with the investigation, and the two are pulled in two directions: towards the suspected anarchists and the tawdry family feuds that were hidden behind the marble facade of the victim's house. The last book focused heavily on the relationship between Frank and Sarah. This book introduces Frank to Sarah's family and the high society she came from. Thompson writes highly charged dialogue between the two that is realistic and on occasion humorous. This is currently one of my favorite series.

Perfect present

I got this book for my sister as a gift. She loves this author and said this book was no exception. She thought the writing was superb.

Anarchists?

Ms. Thompson is bringing in the world of the late 19th century anarchists which I can't help but compare to our idea of modern-day terrorists. In this book a wealthy businessman is blown up by a bomb planted in his office. Frank Malloy is told by his superior, Teddy Roosevelt that it was probably anarchists. Frank tries to find out the truth, and he enlists the aid of his friend Sarah Brandt and surprisingly, Sarah Brandt's mother, Elizabeth Decker. On the way these three find more suspects and motives than they can believe, and they are thrust into the middle of a truly disfunctional family. There are anarchists on the fringes of this family, but Frank and Sarah start looking closer to home to find their murderer. This series is entertaining, and I like the setting - late 19th century New York City. I also like Frank and Sarah, and the mysteries are always intriguing, and a little difficult to figure out. Fans of historical mysteries will like this series.

Good easy read with plenty of twists and turns.

After years of searching for something to fill the gap in Victorian reading left by Caleb Carr, I stumbled upon this book at the library. It was easy enough to get into and a light quick read with just enough side characters and plot twists to make it interesting. The addition of Frank's child and Sarah's interest in Aggie added a little depth to both characters and the secreted love between them added even more. A great, quick and easy read, not too deep, yet still thought provoking and left me wanting more (I subsequently went out and bought the first book in the series).
I nice, compact story, that does justice to the interesting era in which it was placed. Looking forward to reading the others.
