Catan is a Winner
Settlers
of
Catan
adds all the great and fun elements of Monopoly and Risk and possibly "Craps" into a group game. You build an empire by gathering resources through dice rolls and trading your resources with others in order to buy more settlements, cities, and roads to expand your potential resource collection. If that doesn't get you wanting to play, then maybe one of your nerdy friends buying the game will do the trick. But trust me, it is worth it and you'll likely be hooked after you play.
And on the bright side, a game typically lasts 1-2 hours instead of other "greats" like Risk which take 3-4 hours typically.

Our family is having so much fun with this game. We took it to our big family Thanksgiving gathering and had trouble getting people to quit playing to eat! It's absolutley addicting. You do, however, have to have a good attitude or the more sensitive types can get their feelings hurt if playing with a more competitive, ruthless type.
Educationally, I think it's valuable because you really have to THINK your strategy through.
We love it and highly recommend it.
Great Game for all ages!
This game
expansion
adds to an already excellent game. BUT, make sure you look at what Edition of the game you get. If you have the newer version (4th Ed) of
Settlers
of
Catan
, this is the wrong expansion for you. The pieces look different in general. You can still use it I believe b/c I've played both with this version and with the 4th Edition, but it's less confusing if your hex tiles, trading ports, and resource cards look the same.
Also, note that the expansion takes longer to play than the 3-4
player
basic game. You can compensate for this by starting with 1 settlement and 1 city instead of 2 settlements. We enjoy doing this anyway as it helps jump-start the game a bit more. Enjoy!!!

Settlers of Catan
Everyone I've taught this game becomes addicted. Brilliantly balanced, it forces one to spend resources to avoid depredations by the thief, while at the same time tempting one to risk keeping them in order to expand one's holdings. The dice do not always obey the odds, collapsing some strategies and granting others unexpected bounties--just like the real marketplace.
The game teaches kids by illustrating the basic principles of supply and demand, as well as showing a bit about why cities and ports are valuable. I was blown away when my 5-year-old granddaughter resisted advice to choose a settlement location which offered better odds on dice rolls. "No," she said, "Grain will be hard to get on this board, so I am going to go here." She won the game.
The above notes refer to the game as a whole. The
expansion
simply allows one to play with up to 6
player
s instead of being limited to 4: a larger oval-shaped board, more resource and more development cards, a green player's set and a brown one (which I srayed gold because no one wanted to be brown.)
Setting up the board is very time-consuming whether for 4 or for 6 players because of the modular nature of the game. (The infinite changeability of the terrain is one of the great strokes of genius in the game design, however.) I always use the recommended starter layout for beginners, or whenplaying with people who are sore losers--because it offers really good sites for everyone to place their initial settlements. Because I use this layout so often, I'm contemplating photocopying a gameboard just for teaching the game. Photocopying is probably illegal, even though no such board is offered for sale. I would gladly purchase one if such were offered.

Brings Families together...
My family refused to play this game after I bought it. For "Father's Day" I asked them to play. It has now become a regular Sunday family game. When we go to visit our daughter and her family she "demands" that we bring "
Settlers
of
Catan
." We love Settlers of Catan. It is a great game to bring family and friends together. It's not as long as monopoly and tons more fun.
