"I'm Gonna Bust You Up! "

(The following review was written by Karyn's husband, Ted)

Ask anyone you know which Rocky movie was their favorite and they will gladly tell you: 'Rocky 3, the one with Mr.T!" Yes, Stallone returns to the ring for a third time, but Rocky is bloated with fame and success to the point of having forgotten the reasons why he fought so hard to get there. He is reminded very quickly by a relatively unknown fighter named Clubber Lang ( Mr. T ) This walking timebomb has followed Rocky's rise to the top and is convinced he's a sellout-a 'paper champion' with no balls. Stallone stars, writes, and directs with amazing precision as he wants us to see Rocky as just a man. A man who has given in to the very lucrative endorsement deals and temptations that come with fame and being a world champion. Rocky seems to have it all, but has he sold out? Has he lost his soul in his desires to be the best? ( Tiger Woods, are you listening?)
Mr. T educates Rocky the hard way, defeating him like a spoiled step-child in front of the world. Burgess Meredith returns to try and talk Rocky into turning down the fight, but ends up having a fatal heart attack after being abused by the terrible Mr.T. This is a pivotal moment for Rocky as he could just retire for good. Apollo Creed ( Carl Weathers ) also returns as Rocky's best friend and trains Rocky to get back what he has lost-That's right, baby-The Eye of the Tiger! The training montage was invented by Stallone and this one is vintage 80's, but in a good way, not cheesy. Adrian and Paulie also return for the third round and we see how Paulie has feelings after all as he feels left out in the cold by all Rocky's attention. After all the blood, sweat, and tears of the training montage, Rocky is ready to payback Mr.T with a re-match.What is truly amazing to watch is the pure hatred Mr. T has for Rocky- He even makes it very personal when he insults Adrian in public-inticing Rocky to fight. We can feel the never-ending rage that Clubber Lang has even by himself as he trains ! Mr. T is ready to open up a can of whoopass, but underestimates Balboa's determination and persistence in the final fight. I still stand up and cheer as Rocky takes the abuse but keeps fighting like a pit-bull against Mr.T and realizes that Mr.T 'Ain't so BAAD! You ain't so BAAD!'
A truly remarkable victory for Rocky ( The first complete victory since parts one and two were considered a 'tie', remember?) and by far the most entertaining boxing film of all time. Rocky! Rocky! Rocky!

Great Movie

I think the matchup vs Mr. T was great. "Prediction?...Pain." That's my favorite line in the whole series. I remember watching this as a kid and is a classic in my book.

Rousingly Rocky!

Positives:
Great montage depicting Rocky's life after winning the title.
Terrific bad-guy turn by Mr. T as Clubber Lang.
Fun mix of boxing/wrestling with Hulk Hogan portraying Thunder Lips.
Final fight scene.
Apollo Creed's training of Rocky.
Eye of the Tiger. Great song that's still catchy after all these years.
Stallone pokes fun of himself by pointing out all the plastic surgery he had done after Rocky II.

Negatives:
Burt Young is awful. Whether it's due to performance or material is immaterial, as both are wretched.
Talia Shire adds nothing to the movie. Again, whether it's performance or material is immaterial.
Burgess Meredith...overacts. At least his character dies early.

Overall:
Lots of fun. Holds up well.

Better than the second, purely because of Hulk and Mr. T

The one thing I've looked forward to about the Rocky movies is the famous "Eye Of The Tiger" song. I was quite disappointed that it wasn't in the first two - but I got my wish in this. Although, it could have easily been "Another One Bites The Dust" by Queen - I can't really see it working in that film?

Rocky is now 34, and is now a rich and successful boxer. It shows in everything around him, and he can want for nothing. He's defeated in the ring by Clubber Lang (Mr T, in his film debut and looking at OTT as ever.) But then Rocky's trainer, Mickey, dies, and Rocky descends into a state of self loathing and hating himself. He blames himself for Mickey's death, but then Apollo comes back onto the scene and offers to retrain him so he can really fight Clubber Lang.

But then there's also the hilarious scenes featuring Hulk Hogan. If you're not sitting smiling during these scenes, then there's something wrong with you. At 6ft 6in, Hulk is just the littlest bit taller than Sly, who's only 5ft 10in. There's a funny scene where Rocky is just staring at his chest. Then the hilarity really starts.

Mr T really makes his prescence felt on screen as Clubber Lang. For his film debut, he's certainly memorable - shame he pretty much plays the same character in The A Team. What is with the jewellery???

The third installment really makes up for the slightly disappointing second and it had the funny moments too which are always a giggle. After this of course Rocky goes on to face Dolph and then the fifth I've been warned never to watch. And then of course there's Rocky Balboa which I've seen at the cinema. Not sure which is my favourite just yet, but I know it's not the second one.

3 For T

The Rocky franchise died with the first. There can be no others, as a matter of continuity. "There ain't gonna be no rematch." Remember that? And, yet, there was. That was the pinnacle of the story, breaking the Creed's will. This was never about winning, so much as not giving up. But, whatever.

If there was going to be a second addition, this should have been it. With Clubber holding the title and Rocky determined to take it. That would have been fine, but, no...Sly wanted riches. I can relate.

Now, if you can forgive all that, there is fun to be had. It comes by way of Clubber Lang, the most awesome character of all Rocky's opponents. MR T plays this role very well; his best performance of that era. Without Clubber, however, Rocky III does not stand all that well.

Although it is the most fun of the franchise, it is a miss in any other capacity.
