A Jewel
This is a charming book full of wit and beauty. It's a story about
fantasy
and reality, about the power of words and of literary characters to bring insight and meaning to life, and about how we seem to be letting the richness and meaning slip away from the modern world. But it's not at all a "heavy" book; it's written as a light story with a lot of entertaining wordplay, about a woman named Marina who wakes up in a strange place called In The Beginning, which seems to be populated entirely by characters from fiction. But they don't live fairytale lives; they're very worried about what's going wrong in the "other" world, the real world where the readers are. (This much of the plot is already given away on the dust jacket.) The rest of the book is about Marina's quest to figure out what is wrong with "real" life and help her new fictional friends. It's light and charming but deep, although some of the meaning sneaks up on you later. The first time I read it I found the writing annoyingly clever for the first couple of pages; then I got into the playful spirit of it and enjoyed the way the author celebrates the power of words and stories to delight and move us. This book is both sweet and funny, and it conveys an optimistic belief that, in the words of one of the characters, "We're more than we know."

Bad . . . really bad.
A sort of "cute" concept that just doesn't go anywhere, and is not at all well written. The only saving grace is that it is so short, reading took very little time.
