While it may seem an odd notion today, in the 1950s people and the government thought that it would be posssible to survive a nuclear war ? if they were prepared. That is why the government put together these classic film clips contained in the History of Nuclear Defense - Surviving Atomic Attack 2 DVD set.

In the 1950s the threat of a nuclear attack from the Soviet Union seemed like a very real possibility to mainstream America. The government had to do something in order to prevent a panic. That?s why they developed these incredible Cold War era films to tell the populace what to do to feel safe. you will be amazed at some of the advice the government provided to Americans. At one point the newsreel advises that if your house and yard are kept as clean as possible you will have a greater chance of surviving a nuclear blast.

What is fascinating about these films is how incredibly naïve we all were about the dangers the world was facing in the event of an atomic strike! These films could never be produced today. The "Burt The Turtle" film clip is one of the most famous of the Cold War era propaganda films. Using clever animation, Burt assures school children that they have nothing to fear from an atomic attack. This vintage collection of civil defense educational films feature some of the biological effects of high-energy radiations on plants and animal cells and ways for children to protect themselves in case an atomic attack.

Not A Bomb

It must have been terrifying to go to school and grow up in the 50s. Between air raid drills and worries about the Soviet Union, I am so glad I grew up in more modern times.

I got a good sense of why my parents were so worried about things when i was growing up and these films made me really feel like I was back in the Cold War era in a way that the History Channel doesn't.

My favorite scene was MarArthur comming back from Korea

How Far We Have Come

This DVD set astounded me. It made me realize just how far we have come with our understanding of the world and little we knew only 50 years ago. The premise of these clips is that back in the 1950s the goverenment was worried that we were about to be nuked by the Russians and they didn't want people to panic. So, they told people in these films that if they hid under desks or in their basements that they would be able to survive atomic attack. Of course we now know that that is ridiculous, but it's interesting to think that people really believe this stuff back then. It sort of explains how the cold war got to happen for so long.

Finally A Documentary That Let's Me Think For Myself

One of my pet peaves with so many documentaries out there is that the narration overshadows the real footage that I've paid to watch.

I often don't know what background or bias the commentator has and when he or she talks over the film clips it drives me crazy.

That's why I liked his documentary - which is mostly clips of old films about what to do if the Russians attacked us with nukes.

You get to see all of the footage and put it into your own context and experience. It trusts me to think for myself.

That said, I was surprised at how people back in the 1950s seemed to think that school desks would protect them from a nuclear bomb.

We've come a long way baby.
