In this first of three books inspired by the life of
Josephine
Bonaparte, Sandra Gulland has created a novel of immense and magical proportions. We meet Josephine in the exotic and lush Martinico, where an old island woman predicts that one day she will be queen. The journey from the remote village of her birth to the height of European elegance is long, but Josephine's fortune proves to be true. By way of fictionalized diary entries, we traverse her early years as she marries her one true love, bears his children, and is left betrayed, widowed, and penniless. It is Josephine's extraordinary charm, cunning, and will to survive that catapults her to the heart of society, where she meets Napoleon, whose destiny will prove to be irrevocably intertwined with hers.

This is how history should be taught
If I were king I would allow students to learn history through books like this one... I learned more about the French Revolution than I ever even tried to know in school. This book was impossible to put down and I am more than ready to read the next book in the series.
Josephine
"Rose" was an amazing woman and it was a wonder she survived to even meet and marry Napoleon. Her story is wonderous and full of adventure and scandal. For those of you who love historical fiction you wont be disappointed in this book at all.
Speechless
I just finished reading the trilogy (took four days and I have been working too) and I am amazed at how incredible these books were. The history is incredible and told in a way that makes you feel that you are there. I laughed, I cried and now I feel empty. I will miss

I have read this three book series twice
Our Book Club is really enjoying this book and several have already started on the second and third volume. It is well researched, documented and written, and one learns history in a most entertaining way. The only difficulty is keeping the charachers straight, but the references at the back of each volume help. The second and third volumes are easier to assimilate and I would recommend this whole series.
Excellent Read!
I couldn't put this book down. It is filled with so much history during Jospehine Bounaparte's earlier years up to when she meets Napolean. I am not sure how this woman survived all that she lived thru in this book. It is some very good reading.

Great Read
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I felt the pacing wasn't consistent - there were moments that I had to push myself to continue where other times I was flying through, not realizing I was still reading at 1 am! However, it is in a diary format, which I think contributed to the overall pacing. I look forward to reading the other 2 books in this series.
