From director George A. Romero comes a dynamic gothic original.
Martin
is a misunderstood young man who happens to be a vampire...maybe. The sun really just bothers his eye a little garlic and crosses have no effects and he has no fangs. He also doesn't have any vampiric powers which makes acquiring blood an extremely harrowing experience for all involved.Features:New Photo GalleryNew Commentary from G. Romero R. Rubenstein T. 4.5 Stars. Martin: Portrait of a Vampire. Dvd features below.
There are a lot of sick people in the world and that is true horror. Sure vampires are scary when your young and there are a lot of movies that make them erotic and cool but what if someone who was mentally ill really thought they were a vampire and killed people? Maybe a sick person would drug there victims so they are asleep, we wouldn't have the victim experience ecstasy or climax when the fangs sink in as in the movies but they would be totally vulnerable to this individuals fetishes and fantasies. We'll say this person can eat garlic, wears a cross, can go out in the light, can fix his hair in the mirror, yet still has a craving for blood. Perhaps this person came from a dysfunctional and unstable family that also believed in curses and vampires and believed this mentally sick person to also be a vampire, maybe this persons mother who believes it and suffered from her own mental illness and depression that she killed herself because of it. What I've just described is
Martin
who goes to live with his elderly cousin, a Van Helsing type who believes him to be Nosferatu, he plans on saving Martin's soul then destroying him.
Martin is also sexually confused, he is aroused by making sexy stuff with his victims while they are asleep and drinking there blood. In modern day with the invention of the internet people are exposed to every fetish including vampire fetish however in Martin's case along with being a fetish it is also a delusion and an obsession. Again with the internet we can talk to people from a very young age through chat services and be exposed to things at the speed of light, everyday becoming more desensitized to things that are taboo.
Everything in this film plays real as did Henry - Portrait of a Serial Killer (20th Anniversary) and the characters are believable. I believe this to be one of George A. Romero's best films along with Night of the Living Dead (Millennium Edition) and Dawn of the Dead (Ultimate Edition).
Along with Martin being one of the most original spins on the vampire theme, it contains some action, and plenty of suspense. There are times when you find yourself actually nervous for Martin as you were for Norman Bates in Psycho when the car stopped sinking briefly into the bog, we as viewers were almost routing for Norman and at times I found that with Martin. Perhaps we feel for them because they both were sick people who needed help, were victims of there upbringing, and both looked innocent. Maybe it is because both films were made by great directors that know how to play the audience.
This is a must for any fan of George A. Romero. Also a must for fans of vampire films that are open to original ideas, and horror fans in general.

Martin
, though creative and thought-provoking, is now dated and has a low-budget look. Among the difficult to make horror, or vampire, movies it still ranks among the best ever. Like Nosforatu, despite the age, the movie is an under-rated classic. I would love to see the original director re-make the film with today's technology but mostly with his present-day wealth.
martin
is an existential horror-movie.
martin
is outstanding. a domesticated teenager can turn to a supermankiller, when it's demanded.
A vampire without fangs................
What can I say a 70's classic horror. This is George Romero's best film.
Martin
is a teenage vampire who believe he's 84. Unfortunately he seems to need blood for some reason. This film has a strong gothic background. A movie for true horror fans!

Such a deception !
That was the time before profiling and before scientific police, and even before the plague known as AIDS. Romero in his young age had to play the priest in this film of his, be the screenplay writer and the director. He had to do what so many others had done and have his own true, real Nosferatu or vampire or Count Dracula film. And here it is. Though it is shown as an old superstition from the old continent that has moved to the new continent, there is no rejuvenation, no renaissance, no second life to the myth and the end is to be expected and not to be in any way suspected or doubted. Then the film loses all its power because there is no escape for the poor
Martin
and no way out for the whole story that is self contained and locked up in a dying if not dead myth. Now does the technique used by Romero give a second life to that myth? Certainly not. A syringe does not frighten anyone. Some thick red blood does not disgust anyone. So it is flat and there is no way to find any depth in this cheap film.
