A trio of noted Australian musicians--Iva Davies, Richard Tognetti and Christopher Gordon--composed the film's score. They previously collaborated on "The Ghost of Time," a piece commissioned for the Millennium celebrations in Sydney, which came to the attention of Peter Weir. The director was so impressed, he played the piece on the Master And Commander set throughout production, and he asked its creators to write the music for his movie. The score interweaves "Old World" and "New World" music, reflecting the talents and backgrounds of its composers. Iva Davies hails from both pop and classical traditions; Richard Tognetti, one of the world's great violin virtuosos, taught Russell Crowe the ins and outs of the instrument; and film/television composer Christopher Gordon brought orchestral texture to the project. Given the period, it comes as no surprise that the score is infused with source music from Bach (Cello Suite) and Mozart, among other great classical composers. Percussion dominates portions of the score. "Drums signal the forward movement of the ship," says Davies, "that it's on a mission. It brings you back into the action." The score's biggest surprise comes with its use of synthesizers. "Peter doesn't make films in the expected way," says Davies, "and for that reason we wanted the score to be not what everyone expected. Peter wanted some scenes to have what I call a kind of 'futuristic' sense"--conveying the idea that these 19th century sailors were cutting-edge explorers.

INCREDIBLE!!

This CD was one of the most beautiful and stirring collections of music I have ever heard. The percussion and strings combined to make an exquisite melding of sounds. I will purchase other CD's related to this type of music very soon. My 81-year-old mother even enjoyed it!!! Thank you.

Great movie and soundtrack!!

We all know that what makes or breaks a movie is the soundtrack. This is entirely the case with master and commander. I mean sure, it would still be a kick @$$ action movie with excellent actors like Russell Crowe and heart thumping moments like the intense battles where there is so much smoke from the cannons you can't see the guy in front of you. But, what holds the movie in my mind is the soundtrack. I've seen so many action movies the fighting doesn't really stay in my mind that long. The soundtrack, however, really helps tie together the action and the not-so-action parts.
Christopher Gordon, Richard Tognetti and the others who wrote it did a great job! I like the few classical pieces they place in there to make it feel like you're really there in 1805. And let's not forget the excellent music composed by Gordon, Tognetti and others. It gives me a mental picture of the movie every time I listen to it!! I recommend buying the movie and the soundtrack. Also check out some of the other movies Russell Crowe has been in, he does a great job!!

Master and Commander

The music was so beautiful in the film that I HAD to buy the cd. It is my most treasured cd.

Yoyo Ma touches the deepest art of my soul when I hear his Prelude by Bach. The Drumming touches my most primal spirit.La Musica Notturna delle Strade di Madrid #6, Op. 30 gives me such JOY! I feel that everything is okay and the future is going to be the very best for all.

The compositions by Iva Davies,Christopher Gordon and Tichard Tognetti are absolute perfection.

I have played the album over and over and over. If I should die tomorrow, I will know that my life has been fulfulled having heard this most wondrous music (and having raised 4 magnificent children and have completely loved two men in my life.)

I wish that there were some way that I could give a gift to these people who have so touched my life.

Also, I suggest everyone on the planet should see the movie "Master and Commander".(Russell Crowe is a heart throb.)

Outstanding historical re-creation

The historical re-creation of the naval achievements depicted in this film is highly distinguished by the coming together of all important factors that make an outstanding film: the facts depicted in the human interaction, the battles at sea, the visual composition of the diverse scenes, life on board, the acting, the characterizations, the make-up, the props, the general atmosphere of those years, the special effects showing the behaviour of the sea and of the people on board of those vessels, the climate, the colours of the sky, the sea, the interiors, even of the various skins of the actors. And one particularly effective factor: the music that was composed and selected, as more than the background of this picture, showing some of the deep personal traits of the captain and his close friend, and the force of the action.
Of course, the bias shown in favour of the English is quite heavy-handed, but that's the novel's slant, so it's understandable in the film.
The acting of all involved, from the protagonist to the young teenager who survives all the mayhem of the battles, is extremely accomplished, showing not only their individual abilities but the creative hand of the director.
A thoroughly enjoyable work of art, exciting, beatiful to look at, sensitive, emotional and creative. A spectator's experience of high value and satisfaction.
