Movies with "wacky" titles are almost never any good, and Attack of the Killer Tomatoes! was intentionally made to be an instant golden turkey. Despite that, and the grade-Z production values, this is a regularly funny film. You need to be a fan of the kind of low-budget horror movie it's spoofing, and you need to be very forgiving of the technical ineptness and frequent clunkers, but it works. The story? Well, tomatoes attack, basically. Jack Riley and the San Diego Chicken are in it, and that genuinely alarming helicopter crash you see in an early scene was a real accident. Seen now, the whole ratty affair brings back agreeable memories of the circa-1978 college-movie/midnight-cinema era, when seeing this film was virtually unavoidable. The sequel, Return of the Killer Tomatoes! (with a young George Clooney), is actually an even funnier film. Director John De Bello would continue to squeeze the Tomatoes franchise for years to come. --Robert Horton

Wake Up People!

I don't understand most of these reviews here. The tomato wars actually happened. Pretending this was all just some lame "movie" does not bode well for the future of big business in America. Let's learn from history people, lest we be doomed to repeat it. Think!

"Pretty classy, huh?" "With a capital K"

The Attack of the Killer Tomatoes (AotKT) is an absolutely hilarious, cheesy, awful (in a good way) movie that makes it fun to watch. The humor comes before similarly classified "bad" movies such as Airplane, but the style works quite well. It takes a seemingly ridiculous ideas of killer tomatoes and makes it into an over-the-top adventure. Many people will probably call it stupid. I'd agree, but that's what makes the entire film hilarious to watch if you share this kind of humor.

For those trying to decide between the two editions, the "25th Anniversary" edition contains no extras, except for the trailer. I'm glad I went for the the "Special colletor's edition," because it's full of lots of good things:

-A duplicate of the original movie poster, 15" by 21"
-Commentary on the movie (with John DeBello, Steve Peace, and Costa Dillon)
-The original 8mm AotKT film (with commentary)
-The 8mm film that inspired the AotKT film
-Sing-Alongs for all of the songs in the movie
-Deleted scenes (with commentary)
-Interviews with the cast and crew, exploring the legacy behind the movies
-"Where are they now?" featurette
-Tomato trivia, information on props and production design

Altogether, it's a pretty nice package that fits onto one disc. I wasn't expecting the poster to be included, which I thought was a really nice touch, and even had it framed. I'd highly recommend this for any AotKT fan.

Cult Classic

This movie is great. In fact, you have to watch it several times to catch all the humor. I'm sure the movie only cost $25,000 to produce as the special effects are laughable; I'm sure it was intended that way. We've seen this movie several times and still catch things we didn't see the other times. Just a silly funny movie.

The King of Kult Klassics is here!

I don't think a movie has become such an "urban legend" or a "myth movie" as much as "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes" has. Sure, there are legendary cult films like "Night of the Living Dead", "Eraserhead" and "Killer Klowns From Outer Space", but "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes" has basically become the prototype for all the B-movie parodies on TV sketches, the basis for plots on your Saturday morning cartoons, and the definitive "everybody's heard about it, but only half the people have actually seen it" film.
A lot of people would dismiss this film as being dumb, or a cheap rip-off parody, but if you've got a bit of cult-film love in your heart, are entertained by strange comedies and ever considered what would happen if your garden veggies imitated "Jaws" at one point or another (because that DID happen in this flick!), well then, "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes" is on your vine. (Wow, I can't believe I said that!)
For all cult-film lovers, this is an essential, just like "Night of the Living Dead" or "Airplane!" or any of the whacked-out foreign films you might love so much. So to anybody that's at least a little bit like me (Heaven forbid! haha) and interested in something unusual, musical and oddly humorous, this film will be awesome! Thanks for the time, and peace.
