An evocation of a unique time and place in history
This was one of the first early-music recordings I purchased, and I never get tired of listening to it. It is a very good recording to compare with the much more recent VISIONS AND MIRACLES performed by another group. This one illustrates the Islamic music of Moorish Spain, while the other illustrates the Catholic music written to compete with it. The liner notes in this recording are an excellent introduction to the context of
Arabo
-Andalusian music and how and where it has been preserved (and to what extent) in living tradition.
Definitely different
Not a favorite of mine, but it is not leaving my collection. This is actually a pleasant collection and the performances are pleasing. However, it requires the listener, IMO, to actually take the time to listen to the CD. Take the time to pay attention to what is going on and do read the notes. There are subtle sounds in the background that set the stage and add to the experience... you won't 'get it' as commuting muzak. This demands listeners' attention.
