The seventh filming of A.E.W. Mason's classic 1902 novel, this near-epic production of The
Four
Feathers
looks great, sounds great, and feels rather average. It would be difficult to diminish the rousing adventure of Mason's novel, and director Shekhar Kapur (Elizabeth) certainly gets more bang for his buck, with massive battle scenes and rugged, sun-baked harshness enhanced by Robert Richardson's masterful cinematography. Kapur preserves the universal appeal of the story, set in the 1880s, in which a promising soldier (Heath Ledger) resigns on the eve of battle in Britain's Sudanese campaign, is labeled a coward by his fiancée (Kate Hudson), and redeems himself by posing as a Muslim warrior to rescue his best friend Jack (Wes Bentley) from certain death in the desert. For all its heroics, however, the film seems oddly passionless; Djimon Hounsou is excellent as Ledger's desert guardian, but these young Hollywood stars lack the authenticity of Zoltan Korda's 1939 film, which remains the definitive version. --Jeff Shannon

The Four Feathers
This Rendition offers an exceptional interpretation which clearly surpasses all previous movies of the same title and we found it to be a most absorbing and moving story. This is due to the extraordinary talent of Heath Ledger.
Well worth watching.
For many years I hung back from watching this movie due to the poor reviews it received at the release time. Well when I finally caught it on TV, I realized what a gem I had missed, will now purchase it for my own DVD collection. What a loss of an actor Heath Ledger was, firmly believe he would have gone on to be viewed as one of our finest actors of this generation. All the british actors were terrific in their respective roles, only slight miscast would have been Kate Hudson, so many other young british actresses would have been more believeable in the part.Keira Knightley comes to mind.

Surprisingly good flick....
I say that because I had heard so many negative things about it. But because it is a Heath Ledger flick - I had to rent it and see for myself. I ended up really liking it...to the point I knew I would have to add it to my dvd collection. On the strength of Heath's performance alone, I can recommend this film. His character goes through so much to find himself and by the end of the film - he's a different man. To watch Heath go through this transformation is pretty amazing. Would definately recommend it - Heath you are missed.
Superbly acted, will make you think
I never read the novel, nor saw the 1939 old movie version. So I was coming into watching "
FOUR
FEATHERS
" fresh. I expected something boring and predictable. That's not what I got. I was enthralled with this film. It is a complicated and humanistic film that will touch you and make you think in unexpected directions.
Very well-acted. Nice ending, not too sweet, not too sour. Really enjoyable movie. Highly recommended as an epic historical action film.
