The last great Rumble of the WWF

As the WWF would be forcibly renamed WWE later on in the year, this is the last Royal Rumble for the WWF, but also the last great one.

WWF Tag Team Championship
The Dudley Boys vs Tazz and Spike Dudley (C)
Added on in the extras was Tazz and Spike doing commentary on their match, a definite highlight as Tazz is great in the commentary. The match itself was as long as it needed to be, with enough action to keep the audience interested and not complaining for tables like they usually do later on. Spike suffers a bit (not literally) as he does the Dudley Dog three times instead of anything else. (7/10)

Edge vs William Regal
Once again, Regal fails to impress in a very dull effort livened up a bit by Edge. I have no idea what the booking was going for here, but Regal was hardly a technically sound wrestler, or a classic Greco-Roman style here. (3/10)

WWF Women's Championship
Trish Stratus (C) vs Jazz
Typical women's match for the WWF, which is to say little that can impress compared to a men's match. (4/10)

Vince McMahon vs Ric Flair
In my opinion, this match went three or four minutes too long, as it started out incredibly boring with Vince showing off what a high protein and GHB diet can do for a man in his late 50s, and Lawler can't stop wetting his pants because of it. Then the pace picked up as both began to dominate one another in what some people call a "classic" street fight. It wasn't that good for me. (6/10)

WWF Undisputed Championship
Chris Jericho (C) vs The Rock
Phenoms that Jericho and The Rock are, I'm ashamed that I expected nothing much from them. Instead they put on a great WWF wrestling match, with little flair (not Ric) and style, and just a grunginess accentuated by their personalities which made it great. (9/10)

Royal Rumble Match
Not perfect, or as great as the 2000 and 2001 Rumbles, this one was nonetheless greatly executed, with regular intervals in the match creating for a non-stop bash that felt like several matches in one, from Goldust and Rikishi's bout, to the Undertaker dominating, getting eliminated by Maven, and proceeding to take Raven into a Hardcore-style beating all the way up into the concession stands, and Triple H and Stone Cold's brawl towards the end. Very little in the match was actually boring. (9.5/10)

A Disappointment

I expected alot from the 2002 Royal Rumble, but I really dont know why. I really enjoyed the main event, and one or two other matches, but there was nothing stellar here.

Tazz (C) and Spike Dudley (C) vs. the Dudleys
This match could have been better, but it was way too short. These four guys can put on a solid tag match given the right time. Still, it was decent, and about what I expected.

Edge (C) vs. William Regal
This was a very good match, but again, way too short. Edge and Regal are very capable wrestlers and put on a good (and bloody) show. Edge shows alot of promise here, and its no surprise that he's become a big player in the WWE.

Trish Stratus (c) vs. Jazz with Jacqueline as the Special Referee
Trish can put on good matches, but she and Jazz were only given three minutes to work. Granted, Jazz wasnt much of a wrestler anyway. I had hoped for more, but again, I was disappointed.

Ric Flair vs. Vince McMahon in a Street Fight
I rather liked this match. Flair proves he can still take a beating, and Vince looked better than I could have hoped. Unfortunately, the match was all blood and violence, and Flair didnt get to showcase his true wrestling talent.

Chris Jericho (C) vs. the Rock
Overrated as he is, the Rock can put on some decent matches when given a good wrestler to work with, and Jericho is an excellent wrestler. This is one of the few matches of the night that didnt disappoint. Perhaps not the duos greatest match, its still worth a watch.

2002 Royal Rumble Match
The main event started off slow, and really only got interested when Steve Austin entered the ring. Triple H made his return, and much to my delight, so did Mr. Perfect, Curt Hennig. Once the match got down to the final four (Steve Austin, Kurt Angle, Triple H, and Hennig) this match got to be VERY good. These four guys put on one hell of a show. And the best part is, the four of them got to go at it for about 10 minutes, as the match itself clocked in at 69 minutes. A predictable ending couldnt put a damper on this one.

Its hard to recommend this show, because the undercard is pretty weak, and the Rumble only picked up in the last half hour. If you can, watch the Rumble though. Mr. Perfect proves he can still wrestle 8 or 9 years after he got out of the came, and its hard not to get a little nostalgic when you get to see the now late Curt Hennig exchange blows with the biggest stars of the time.

Who is Going To The WrestleMania X8 Main Event?

Royal Rumble is usually one of the biggest events of the year and with the success of the last WWF Royal Rumble in 2001, there were many high hopes for this one. Unfortunately, this one was not able to top that previous Rumble but it was still a good show. I'll mention the DVD features that are disappointing later as I felt brought the event down a star.

Tag Team Champions Tazz & Spike Dudley vs The Dudley Boyz. This was actually a good opener but not a great one considering the fact that nothing special came out of it. Plus the match seemed rushed and it was not given proper time to become something.

Intercontinental Champion Edge vs William Regal. This was not that good of a match and the rivalry was not that great either. Their styles do not click and they seem to be off when they try to work. This match is watchable and it does not last long but not exactly great.

Women's Champion Trish Stratus vs Jazz w/Jaqueline as the referee. These two ladies can deliver a good match but they were only given about three minutes and Trish was selling a hand injury. Again could have been better.

Street Fight: Ric Flair vs Vince McMahon. This one is a tough one to call as most of the match is dominated by Vince McMahon and Flair was only able to get a few moves here and there. This match is still entertaining because both men take vicious shots and sell them quite good but we have seen better street fights including the one at King of the Ring 2001.

Undisputed WWF Champion Chris Jericho vs The Rock. Every single time that these two go at it, they deliver the best match on the card. This one is no exception. While it is not on the level as their No Mercy match or even better than their Vengeance match, Rock & Jericho have that chemistry that can make any match work together. Great performance here and one of the best of 2002.

Royal Rumble Match. This Rumble had its weak points but once the match picked up, it never ends. Truly the Rumble gets interesting when Undertaker enters, but once he is eliminated the match stales. That is until Stone Cold Steve Austin comes out and from there, the match is very solid. Highlights include Taker's short dominance along with his shocking elimination at the hands of Maven, the return of the Hardy Boyz, Stone Cold's dominance along with his confrontation with Triple H and the final four involving Austin, Triple H, Kurt Angle & Mr. Perfect.

Overall, I enjoyed this event but the reason I give this DVD three stars is for the DVD functions. First of all, the Rumble's theme song "Cocky" by Kid Rock & Undertaker's theme is replaced with generic music. Edge's theme are changed by his old one. The bonus features are not that special either so I would recommend getting the VHS version for a cheap price.
