Most Loved and Cherished TV Vampire Collection

I very much loved my purchase of the 'Kindred the Embraced'-The Complete Vampire Collection. It is one of the best vampire stories I have ever seen on TV. So much drama and realism but enough fantasy and storybook romance to hold you tight and capture your imagination. I must have watched it everyday for the first two weeks after receiving it. I have no disappointments with the DVD. Even the omitted commercial pauses, doesn't take away from the excellence of quality and magnificence of viewing pleasure. I only wish the beautiful and talented late Mark Frankel was able to provide his forever fans with more of his great presence. His face is a face I can look at 24 hours a day and never tire of. His family must be still and forever saddened by his absence. He had a mannerism that could not be duplicated or repeated by any other actor, thus far that I have seen. We are so fortunate and honored to have these short but precious episodes of a man who has touched the soul of many including myself. I will treasure this collection and hand it down to my future generations to also enjoy. I thank all those responsible for this gift.

Summary, kindred series

DVD arrived promptly and in perfect condition. The series itself is the first real attempt to base a vampire chronicle around vampire politics and intrigue. The Blade series is the next series to use this theme extensively.

Great production, but...

I REALLY REALLY felt that the using of Interview with a vampire soundtrack in the pilot was tacky and brought down the production value enormously. It reminded me of being a student film maker. If it weren't for this mistake I would have given it 5 stars. For one Kindred and IVWV both have 2 differant moods and not every one likes "Interview with a vampire" I don't personaly I see vampires in a differant mood, and mixing the 2 diffrent vampire sub genres was very anoying. Aside from this I really did enjoy the collection and have watched it a few times.

Great vampire series!

This series is wonderful, the reason I am only giving it four stars is becouse of the to few episodes made for this series so it is sort of cut off in mid story. Yes pepole this is one more great show canceled before it can really pick up.

This series is based on the role playing game Vampire the Masquerade by White Wolf game studio. The main character Julian Luna is San Fransisco's Prince, the leaders of the city vampires, and there is a soap opera style plot with love affairs and betrayal that go on with him, and the city vampires and the humans they involve themself with.

The acting is top notch, the storyline is great, though be aware that while there are a few fights this is more drama than action. I have nothing bad to say about this series. If you like vampires you will most likely like this, the only negative thing is that is was canceled before it's plot got to run it's course.

There Are Two Types of Vampire Tales

The ones were vampires follow the time honoured rules (no going in the sun, no eating, drinking, or reproduction, needing to drink blood in order to stay alive, etc) and the "New Agey" vampire who seems to have no rules, fewer weaknesses, seems completely human, does not have to drink blood, etc. If you're like me, you'll prefer "Forever Knight" to this series precisely because, unlike "Forever Knight", this programme does not follow anything close to the classic vampire mythology. Now, I know some people are going to say, "But it's just fantasy. It doesn't have to have rules", but the backbone of the scifi/fantasy genre is that one is working with an established (or, as in the case of Star Wars/Trek, the authors are establishing their own myths) mythology that tells the viewer how exactly this world and this society differs from the mundane human world. For instance, in this miniseries, the vampires have no problem going in the sun, can be killed with bullets, eat, drink, and have sex. All of these go against the classic myths. Why is that important? Well, for one, because the restrictions show that vampires have paid a heavy price for immorality. They can no longer enjoy the carnal pleasures that we common humans do. The Kindred seem to have paid no price beyond not being able to reproduce (which, I guess when considering films like "Blade" they are staying closer to the myth than many, but still it's not enough). Also, basic biology will tell you that in order to eat, drink, and have sex, cells must forever be born and die in order to break down food and to create reproductive fluids. Now, if these vampires have that process occuring, they could not possibly be immortal because the process of celluar aging and rebirth is called aging. You eat food, the body breaks it down to create new cells, and the old ones die. Why the writers of this series couldn't figure that out is beyond me.
Let me make a few things clear: one, I have never played the game upon which this series is based. If you are a player and have seen that the rules of the game match up well with the series then please let me know. Secondly, I am a major "Forever Knight" fan and really wanted to like this series, but it had none of the aspects that made FK great. No flashbacks, no existential crisis, no beautiful costumes, no amazing actors (Nigel Bennett is and forever will be the greatest actor to bring a vampire to life, and Lacroix is the most awesome vampire of all time), none of it. But clearly they had seen FK because there were some blantant ripoffs (the music club that Lily runs is called "Haven". The club Jeanette runs is called "The Raven". Coincidence? I think not). Thirdly, in its favour, some of the storylines are very good. I loved the creation of the Nosferatu and the various clans and their war. That was very interesting. The actor who played Julian is good, but no Nick Knight (the series' version Geraint Wyn Davis, not Rick Springfield). Other than Julian, the acting seemed rather stiff to me and many of the characters (Sasha being chief among them) were pretty one dimensional and lacking.
Overall, while this series isn't horrible, it's not great either. If you're interested in buying this, check it out on SciFi channel before you do so that you know whether these are the type of vampires that will hold your interest. They didn't for me, but everyone has his own taste. Be warned, however, that if you want a truly fantastic vampire series, head over to "Forever Knight". I challenge anyone to find a vampire more compelling than Lacroix.
