Pure Enjoyment

Ghiaurov, who is unfortunately already deceased, is undoubtedly one of the most gifted vocal performers of the 20th century. He has it all: a smooth and deep bass voice, impeccable vocal technique, the ability to move effortlessly within his range, excellent diction in all singing languages (Italian, Russian, French) - you name it.

But his most distinctive quality, which sets this CD apart from all other interpretations of these arias I have heard, is the ability to feel the music, and deliver an interpretation which is not only musically superior, but also carries with it the spirit of the particular role and aria.I regret that I never had the chance to see Ghiaurov live on stage, which would have undoubtedly been an unique experience.

It is impressive how Ghiaurov manages to perform equally well arias such as The Song of the Viking Guest from Sadko, and Toreador's Song, the last one being adistinctively baritone aria. It should be noted that he never even sang the role of Escamillo in a live performance.

I am not going to go through the song list. I just want to say that I spent about 10 minutes trying to come with a track that stands out, and thought of none. SImply put, every single aria on this CD is flawlessly delivered, from the first to the last note.

I strongly recommend this album to all lovers of the classical bass voice.
