Fun and Educational Game
While I've only played
Oregon
Trail
1, 2, and 4 in my youth, I can easily say 2 was the best of the series. Oregon Trail puts the player in the 1800's during times when people hoped for a more properous life out West. The history of Oregon Trail is very interesting and this game does a good job of showcasing many elements of that era into the game.
The basic goal of the game is to reach the end of the trail by traveling through the Oregon Trail. Along the way you'll face various dangers, obstacles and diseases, and will need to make choices - sometimes life or death - that best get you through the situation.
The game was incredibly past its time when it came out, and there are so many things you can do and so many options that the possibilities are endless. Very rarely will you encounter the same experience with every trip on the trial. Perhaps the most unique feature of this game is that there are 4 destinations you can get to, not only Oregon City, Oregon.
I remember I used to always get freaked out by the sometimes frightening and dramatic music that the game gives when something terrible or dangerous happens. I don't know if kids would be scared by that but that's perhaps the only flaw I find with the game. I just always turned the volume off while traveling.
Personally, I believe that this version of the game has the most replay value and educational value, and its also fun for adults and children alike. It's definitely a game I would say you could play together as a family.
Let me give you some insight into two of the other versions of the game, and why they are passable.
Oregon Trail 1 was a very good classic game, but the DOS graphics may be a little too cartoony and blocky for people who enjoy a more realistic experience.
Oregon Trail 4, a newer version is also not too shabby. However, there are multiple reasons why it's flawed.
1. It has 3 discs and requires you to switch discs as you advance through the game.
2. It uses an older version of Quicktime that is required to view most of the animations, which really add most of the life to the game. I've been having problems viewing those animations on my XP computer.
3. One destination as opposed to Oregon Trail 2, and the experience doesn't vary a whole lot with each play.
Oregon Trail 2 is the best version of the game and a really good game overall. If you like adventure games, the freedom and challenge that this game gives will not dissapoint. In my opinion this game greatly honors the Oregon Trail and those who traveled on it in the 1800's.

Way Cool Game
I played this game in school and it rocked! When you start out, you choose names for your people and buy lots of interesting things to help you on your journey. Then, you travel the
trail
! Along the way, you'll encounter lots of different senarios, such as sickness, injury, robbery, and natural disasters. Plus, you get to hunt a variety of different animals that are actually native to that area. All in all, a really awsome game, and well worth the money.
Very Fun Game!
This game is very fun! I remember playing the original
Oregon
Trail
game and it was fun as well but when Oregon Trail 2 came out, I had to have it! I could easily play this game for hours! It is pretty cool because the graphics are way better than what the original game was and there is way more products that you can purchase for your trip. Also, I love the way that they show a video of someone talking to you or when you go to a major point on your trip it'll show a video talking about that as well. This game is truly awesome and should be compatible with any computer built in the past 5 years.

Very well done
I started playing this game when I was much younger, but even after all these years I still enjoy it. In a sense I'm not sure that you can be too old for the game (I am nearly 20 and still enjoy it).
I think that it is a great educational tool. I learned quite a bit about the
Oregon
trail
era by playing this game and what it was like travelling the Oregon trail and the history and geography of the area. You learn without even really making an effort at it, and it is fun.
Highly recommended.
Great fun and great thinking!
A great game that kids love - the skills and knowledge taught are invaluable and the kids love to play it! A must on everyone's shelves!
