It traces the story of the British Suffragettes and their struggle to gain the vote in Britain, as seen through the eyes of its leaders, Emmeline Pankhurst (played to perfection by Sian Phillips, who played Livia in I Claudius) and her daughters (one of whom is played by Patricia Quinn who was Augustus' daughter in I Claudius). As with other civil rights movements there were divisions between those wanting to use strictly peaceful, nonviolent methods and those who felt that more radical tactics were called for. For this reason, it is very relevant to our time and is liable to elicit various reactions from those watching it today.
