The
Double
Headed
Eagle
, a documentary about
Hitler
's
rise
to
power
in Germany, takes the unusual approach of using no narration, relying almost entirely on vintage newsreel footage (which is shown with English subtitles). The intent is to show how people at the time would have viewed the Nazis as they came to the world's attention, and some of this contemporaneous footage is remarkable. The turmoil following Germany's humiliation at the end of World War I is shown in clips illustrating economic devastation, and Hitler's speeches at early Nazi rallies display the bizarre hold he could have over a crowd. But letting the film footage speak for itself is not entirely successful. It should be noted that those unfamiliar with the history of the period may find the film puzzling at times. But if this documentary is not a good introduction to the history of the period, filmmaker Lutz Becker deserves praise for selecting material that is often quite arresting. As the production slowly unfolds, the rise of the Nazis from a curiosity on the fringe of German politics to the central power in the nation is ultimately demonstrated in a highly visual manner. --Robert J. Berkeley 1973
I just ordered this video. I assume it is the same one I saw as a student at Berkeley in 1973. The title then was "Swastika" and it was a documentary directed by Philippe Mora. I have been looking for this title for years and only recently discovered that it has been renamed "The
Double
Headed
Eagle
." Please let me know if this is incorrect.
This is more a work of film art than historical documentary!
This is a "film school" style masterpiece! The makers of this film use stock newsreel and cinema footage and edit same into an arty "stream of consciousness" style documentary about
Hitler
's
rise
to
power
. I recommend this for the most advanced collectors of this historical era who might like to see history unfold without intrusive narration. It really works like an arm chair time machine! It succeeds in showing that most of the German people could never have guessed what was coming. Heck, they were too busy in dealing with what was already there! Hindenburg? He probally thought it was better to deal with the enemy he knew (Hitler)rather than the enemy he didn't! (The Reds!) Hitler's anti semitism? Just another culter kamph! The beer hall "Putch", "Mein Kamph!", and the theories of aryan superiority simply proves that those who drink beer, think beer!

Home Movies of the Nazi Movement
This is sort of a home-movie compilation of the Nazi's
rise
to
power
. For the most part, it's not terribly interesting or compelling. More editing would have helped get the message across, but if you're just interested in seeing old footage of people rallying in the streets during this period, then this might be ok.
