There's more to going to the movies than seeing the movie itself - it's the popcorn! Now, with the Whirley Pop Popcorn Maker, you can make fluffy, delicious popcorn just like you get at the theater. The stay-cool hardwood handle turns the stainless steel paddle inside, preventing scorching and burning, and making certain every kernel pops up like it should. The steam vents on top allow moisture to escape so the popcorn is always light and tender. Much quicker than microwaving, the popper makes up to 6 quarts and comes with a 25 year warranty. Also included with the popper is 1 popcorn packets (each one making up to 6 quarts) and "secret ingredient" flavoring packets that give the popcorn that movie-popcorn taste. The popper also comes with a recipe book for more popcorn flavor ideas.Pan is made of aluminum and the lid is made of stainless steel and aluminum.

Great for roasting coffee

After researching, experimenting, and eventually succeeding at home roasting, I thought I'd offer a little advice here as a means of encouraging rookies. You DO NOT need to make a huge investment or be a culinary genius. You can home roast inexpensively and without fancypants equipment.

Acquire the following:
Whirley Pop popcorn maker
Coleman "One Burner" propane stove
a colander
green coffee

Part 1 - setup
This process produces A LOT of smoke. You'll need to either roast outside or mount an industrial strength vacuum hose directly above your range; your kitchen fan won't cut it. Therefore, I recommend some sort of outside heat source. I tried the Whirley Pop on my grill at first and even at full blast it didn't provide enough heat (the beans would brown but never reach the "cracking" stage). Pick up a single burner Coleman propane stove ($20-$30); I use the upright model but the other models would probably work as well.

Part 2 - process
Green coffee beans expand to at least twice their size once roasted, so plan accordingly. I tried roasting a handful of beans at first but have had more success with larger quantities - say, a cup or two of green beans. Set your Coleman stove on its lowest setting and light it. Even on low, it's hotter than the grill. Note that you DO NOT need a thermometer despite online advice to the contrary. (People roasted coffee for roughly 1,000 years before household thermometers came along. You'll be just fine without one.) Dump your beans into the Whirley Pop and begin turning the crank lever; you'll be turning the entire time, but it doesn't need to be too fast - just enough to keep the beans moving.
You should see smoke after a few minutes. Crank until you hear the "first crack," a distinctive popping sound that lasts 30 seconds or so, depending on quantity of beans. At the first crack you should take note of the time, since timing after this point is crucial. I've found that roasting for 5-7 minutes after the first crack produces a good roast. I've also read about a "second crack," which isn't nearly as easy to hear as the first crack. Therefore, note the time from the first crack and, via practice, establish the right amount of time for you.
You can try to judge the roast level by looking at the beans, but this is problematic because it's hard to see through the smoke into the bottom of the Whirley Pop, and the beans will continue to roast after you remove them. When you do decide that they've roasted enough, pour them into the colander. You'll want to blow on them to get the chaff out of the beans - the stuff goes everywhere, another argument for doing this outside.

Part 3 - degassing
Let the beans cool and degas for at least 12 hours. In our case, the beans really didn't smell like coffee beans until after they'd sat overnight. At this point you're ready to grind, drink, and gloat.

Good luck!

Popcorn fan

This was for my husband. He loves popcorn and the whirly pop is the only thing he likes to pop it in. Well while we were on vacation the older kids broke his. We sure don't know how because we have had it for ever and never any problem with it. Anyway we ordered one and it came in damaged. You could tell it was damaged in shipping. I got on line and they sent me out another one and we used the label to ship the damaged one back for free. Kodos to Amazon! Well my husband got his whirly pop a day later. They upgraded the shipping for free. Needless to say my husband is very happy with his whirly popper.

Excellent popper!

I am so glad I purchased this popper. It is ten times better than the air popper I used to own and 100 times better than microwave popcorn. The key thing to remember is that you must season it first with vegetable oil, which the instructions tell you how to do....very easy, just heat up the pan with oil for a few seconds then wipe it out. After that, you use canola oil when you pop the corn. Don't use too much popcorn as it will not pop properly. The book says 1/2 cup, but I prefer 1/3 cup. Stop turning the handle when it becomes difficult to move and remove from heat. Season the popcorn, after it's popped, any way you like. Wipe out the pan with a paper towel and you are finished with clean-up. How easy is that?!?! Wonderful product. My sister is now begging for one for Christmas.

Easy to use for all ages

Great popper. My mom had one simular to this years ago. I'm sure it's not the same company but the results are the same. This is so easy to use, our grandkids enjoy helping me make the popcorn. It's easy for us grandparents to use too! Makes great popcorn.

Old fashioned popper

This makes great tasting popcorn and uses very little oil so is healthier than microwave for sure. The metal is pretty thin, especially the lid so it has to be handled carefully. I've learned you must follow the portion directions exactly or you will end up with burned popcorn or a mess of oil on the lid. Be sure to send in the warranty card because it is a pretty flimsy popper!
