Fiddler on the Roof is one of Broadway's great classics. Based on the tales of Sholem Aleichem, the musical tells the humorous and heartbreaking story of the milkman Tevye as he tries to maintain the simplicities of his traditional life even as his daughters grow up and Russia heads toward revolution. Many of Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick's songs have become touchstones of popular culture, including "Tradition," "If I Were a Rich Man," and "Sunrise, Sunset." As Tevye, Zero Mostel leads--and at times dominates--the original 1964 Broadway cast, displaying irrepressible swagger and bluster. A young Julia Migenes plays his middle daughter, Hodel, while those who only know Bert Convy as a game-show host will be surprised by his pleasant voice as her suitor. Great recording!

I chose Fiddler for my students' spring musical, and always like to get the original cast recording to help give me an idea of the original idea for the pieces in the show. This recording definitely delivers, and the interview with Sheldon Harnick at the end is an extra treat. Awesome CD!

Wonderful after all these years

This CD was wonderful. It arrived promptly and in mint condition. The music is fabulous and most probably will endure forever.

Fiddler on the Roof - 1964 Original Bway Cast

This CD is one of my all time favorites. I just love the music. The only reason I purchased it on a CD is because my original copy was on an 8 track tape cassette. I'm so glad that I can now enjoy it again.

Fiddler as Good in '09 as in '64

The music has run through my head since I saw "Fiddler" in 64, and two other times in community theaters. When my grandson landed a role in an acting camp production, I wanted him to hear the original. The kids did a great job, but no one can stir the emotions and the imagination as well as Zero and his crew. The words are poignant, the presentation is superlative and the repretroir is entertaining. The disc remains in my car player, and I often dream of what I would do "If I Were a Rich Man!"
