David Helpling's sophomore effort fulfills the promise of his first CD, Between Green and Blue. The guitarist is still influenced by Patrick O'Hearn, sharing the same penchant for smoldering, sensual rhythms and simple yet highly evocative melodies. He arranges it all on guitar and synthesizers, although it's often difficult to tell which is which. Helpling sends his guitar through a stream of effects and delays, using volume swells to mask its attack, turning his stringed instrument into an ambient orchestra. Across sequencer rhythm loops that sound like a pan-ethno drum troupe floating in space, Helpling layers surging synth pads draped with simple melodies that create a moody, cinematic expanse. Because he's a guitarist, Helpling has a natural sense of phrasing that eludes many keyboardists in this area of melodic electronics. --John Diliberto

sublime
For several years now, I have been playing this music to go to sleep to. My wife and I rely on it to usher us into dreamland each night. There are not many recordings out there that can serve do that! and it stands the test of time
The talented David Helpling
David Helpling is not only a local talent, but with releases such as "
Sleeping
on the
Edge
of the
World
", he again expands his talents far beyond his local roots and enters the realm of world super talent. His music is creative and relaxing. This release along with his first masterpiece, "Between Green & Blue", defines what new age(ambient) music is all about. With this album, Mr Helpling continues to define what is indeed wonderful music.

Very good!
I am not an expert in this type of music. In the past few years I have become more interested in music from "Hearts Of Space" and "Echoes" broadscasts. This album so far seems to be some of the most impressive music of perfectly composed arrangements I have heard yet. Great album!
This Album Is Something Special
This album provides a very nice calm journey for you to go on. I have a lot of New Age music, and have a good idea of what is out there.
Sleeping
on the
Edge
of the
World
is something special. It should not be overlooked. It is for every New Age fan's collection. This album is dreamy bliss. If you like this, you will also like "Treasure", where David teams up with Jon Jenkins with very good results. Consider both for your collection. If you like the peaceful vibe you will also want to check out 2002. They are the best in the business.

pretty good outing
i've never heard of david helpling before. i bought this as an impulse buy. it's pretty good. like many of the reviewers mention, it is new age, electronic music. i'd compare it to mid-period vangelis. patrick o'hearn was mentioned and he's like him too.
sleeping

... reminds me of the "bladerunner" soundtrack. this release would make a good replacement for the movie. as enjoyable as it is, it's not the type of cd i'd listen too often. in my opinion, the new age market is pretty lackluster. if you like vangelis and o'hearn, this cd will fit into your collection nicely.
