Pricy, but well worth the cost
I love
rice
, but despite all efforts, can't seem to cook it properly on the stove. At best, I get so-so results; at worst, it's a ball o'gummy mess.
So I turned to a rice
cooker
a few years ago. Tried a couple of the inexpensive ones, but was not too pleased with the results - sometimes it was great, but a lot of times the rice came out over or undercooked (or even scorched on the bottom).
I was very impressed with the
Zojirushi
bread maker, so figured I'd bite the bullet and try out their rice cooker. I went for this model since it seemed to provide the best value - less expensive than the induction models, but more full-featured than the lower models.
In the year I've had it, the Z has never failed to turn out a perfect batch of rice each and every time. Brown rice, regular white rice, sushi rice, jasmine rice - you name it, it comes out perfect every time.
Snap to use, but be absolutely sure not to lose the plastic measuring
cup
- success depends on putting in the correct amount of rice. Cleanup is easy since the bowl is non-stick. The upper plate is the only part that can be a bit tricky to clean. It washes very easily, but it sometimes takes a minute to get it to snap back in properly.
Everything is well thought-out, including the design of the lid which keeps moisture from dripping onto the cooked rice so it does not get soggy.
If you like rice but can't (or don't want to) cook it on the stove top, this is a must purchase. Pricy, but one of those cases where you get what you pay for!

Excellent investment for the kitchen
Especially with an adolescent in the house.
As an adolescent appetite arrived in our house, we took the advice of an acquaintence, and arranged for a
rice
cooker
to arrive in our house. This thing takes all the drudgery out of making real rice (as opposed to instant or any other precooked rice). The timer is an excellent feature, as you can start the rice before sunrise, and not be distracted as you cook everything else, and have the rice arrive at the table with everything else at sunset. Cleaning is simple; take out the inside bowl and sponge off, wipe down the inside of the cooker.
Although we are an American family of northern European descent, we've found rice is the 'easy button' for dealing with teenager who seems to require tera-calorie meals. And the
Zojirushi
rice cooker is the way to go.

nice
This
rice
cooker
is great. The instruction manual is kinda vague, but the buttons on the machine itself are strait forward. DO NOT LOSE THE MEASURING
CUP
! All the measurements are based on the included cup, so don't lose it, or you will be guessing all the time. Makes white rice perfectly, and the '
warmer
' setting keeps it perfect for well over a day. Totally worth the investment.
works ok but hard to clean
I got this
rice
cooker
brand new and have been using it since 8/2002. My family and I use it 1-2 times a day, every day.
Pros:
-White rice option works great.
-Cute design.
-Time pre-set option.
-Retractable electrical cord.
Cons:
-Inner lid can't be removed, which makes it hard to clean. With regular use and/or over time, fluid/food accumulates and the fact that the outer and inner lids aren't removable, means having to tilt the whole unit upside down while slowly rinsing. This is while avoiding water in other parts of machine.
-Porridge option makes porridge that's too thick, very much the consistency of rice pudding, no matter how much extra water you put or if you pre-soak the rice. I was hoping for more-liquidy porridge.
-Expensive.
Overall, if I had to choose again, I would not go with this item. My experience with this product definitely makes me think twice about buying any
Zojirushi
product. I would rather go with a Tiger rice cooker next time.

It's served us well for 3 years
This is the particular model that we own among the hundreds of
rice
makers out there. It's worked well and I agree with the other reviewers that it wasn't easy to get it to work the first few times, but overall it's served us well.
The reason we need to replace it is that now the cover won't stay firmly shut when it's cooking. We used to like the ability to start the rice cooking whenever we wanted to and it would keep it warm and properly moist for a day or two. Now we have to use the cooking timer so that it starts cooking an hour or two before we get up the next day; it will only keep the rice moist for a couple of hours since the cover isn't tight anymore and it begins to dry out after that.
At its current price I'd say it's almost worth buying the same model again; the (possibly) better-built ones are way more expensive. I wouldn't recommend buying the el cheapo ones--the cooking quality is almost at the campsite level and you won't get the features like being able to keep the cooked rice moist and firm for much longer than an hour (!).
I'll probably get this model again or something similar.
Zojirushi
is a good maker of these kinds of products, at reasonable prices.
