Music-video-director-turned-auteur Michel Gondry continues to charm with his low-tech offering BE
KIND
REWIND
. Set in dreary Passaic New Jersey the comedy centers on two of the town's residents: trouble-making Jerry (Jack Black) and well-meaning Mike (Mos Def). Mike works in a video store in an age where the VHS is long dead but the store's owner Mr. Fletcher (Danny Glover) doesn't seem to be in any hurry to change. When Mr. Fletcher leaves town for a trip he entrusts his store to Mike with one piece of advice: don't let Jerry in the store. But after some mischief Jerry returns to the store in a strange state. Not only is he weirder than usual but he's also magnetized which causes the entire store's stock to be erased. In order to keep the struggling business afloat Mike and Jerry begin remaking the films in the store one by one. Their hilariously low-budget versions of films such as GHOSTBUSTERS and RUSH HOUR 2 soon begin to draw attention and business to the store but that creates a whole new set of problems for the pair. Though Gondry's three previous fiction films--HUMAN NATURE ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND and THE SCIENCE OF SLEEP--were all essentially love stories BE KIND REWIND captures another kind of romance. Both the writer-director and his characters are in love with the cinematic medium itself and their devotion shows. BE KIND REWIND doesn't reach the heights of ETERNAL SUNSHINE but it doesn't seem to be aiming for that genius. This is simply a hilarious comedy fun for film fans of all stripes which celebrates the sheer joy of watching and making films.System Requirements:Running Time: 101 minutesFormat: DVD MOVIE Genre: COMEDY/BUDDY FILMS Rating: PG-13 UPC: 794043121470 Manufacturer No: 1000038873

"Because We're Ghostbusters!"
This film is everything I expected from the preview, off-base comedy derived from silly interpetations of classic films...with heart.
I almost didn't rent it after the guy at Blockbuster said it wasn't really a "comedy", but he was WRONG! This movie is hilarious! It's more along the lines of Napoleon Dynamite where there are no set-ups or punchlines, the humor is in the quirkiness of the characters and their attitudes.
The "Sweded" movie parodies featuring Jack Black and Mos Def are where the real laughs come from, especially when they just slightly tweak lines and situations from Ghostbusters and Rush Hour 2. This mixed with the characters' faux bad acting and innocence really ups the giggle factor. Mia farrow is also funny as a very realistic weird neighborhood lady who we've all run into at the bank or the supermarket before.
I bought it, you should buy it, your family should buy it and then get one for the dog.

Delightful Film
Story was really cute, shot well. Acting was FANTASTIC - the actors really expressed what the director was going for. I liked Mos Def before, but I REALLY liked him in this role. It was a different
kind
of film for Danny Glover, but he did well. Strange casting for Mia Farrow, but if I forget all the films she's done before then it works well. Really good choice for Jack Black - to stretch him out of the rut he was starting to dig - still similar to previous work, but enough different, and out of the primary roll to balance Mos Def's great performance.
Rather inspiring for aspiring filmmakers. Like a fantasy that has become part of reality - the lights don't sparkle as brightly, and maybe the colors are a little dull, but it's REAL. Exactly what I've come to expect from this director.
