Debbie Ford believes that we each hold within us a trace of every human characteristic that exists, the capacity for every human emotion. We are born with the ability to express this entire spectrum of characteristics. But, Ford points out, our families and our society send us strong messages about which ones are good and bad. So when certain impulses arise, we deny them instead of confronting them, giving them a healthy voice, then letting them go. It is to these feelings that Ford turns our attention, these parts of our selves that don't fit the personae we have created for the rest of the world. She shows us the effects of living in the
dark
, of keeping all our supposedly unsavory impulses under wraps. We find ourselves disproportionately frustrated and angry at the selfishness of friends, the laziness of colleagues, the arrogance of siblings. When we are unable to reconcile similar impulses in ourselves, Ford explains, we waste our own energy judging others instead of empathizing. But most important, we deny ourselves the power and freedom of living authentically. Through the stories and exercises in The Dark
Side
of the
Light
Chasers
, Debbie Ford shows us not only how to recognize our hidden emotions, but also how to find the gifts they offer us. The very impulses we most fear may be the key to what is lacking in our lives.

This book changed my life...
This book is like a work-book for life. I don't think that I would be as happy with myself and my life it I had not found this book. It was loaned to my by a friend and it changed my life. This book has helped me work through so many things in my life. I think that everyone should read this book.
A must-read-book
A very close friend of mine bought this book for me, and I must admit that I couldn't thank him enough since it's such an amazing book to read! Each and every one of us has our own
dark
side
that has keeps us from moving forward and making important changes in our lives...by reading this book, it will help us finding our own self, loving every aspect of it and accept ourselves just they way we are...from there on, we could then change to someone that we're supposed to (who we really want to be), not what we've been told to be

excellent tool for self growth and exploraion
As an EFT practitioner, I find this book a great tool to work towards self acceptance and the acceptance of others.
Useful stuff
I'm reading this book in the
light
of a comparison with the literature on positive psychology. I know I need to spend some more time studying what the latter is saying, but I think it is easy for people to get the message from it that you don't need to look at your weaknesses. Even if this is a misinterpretation of positive psychology, Ford is a good corrective. I think looking at your weaknesses is important.
I liked the image of the golden buddha encased in clay.
The other comparison I had in mind while reading this book is the messages that emanate from "The Secret" and similar books. It seems to me that the message many people get from such books is that good things come magically, in response to a belief in a positive affirmation. May the doors always be open to magic and miracles. But I don't think life is as simple as this, and as humans it is sheer vanity to think that something will come true simply because we want it to.
I like what Ford is saying. I think she has a keen sense of the distinction between the material and the spiritual. The quest is to become what we may be. I also like the way she has written her book. It's a nice balance of story, explanation and application.
