A good gift for the cook who has everything

I gave this to my mom, who does a lot of cooking. She likes CorningWare a lot, so when I saw that they had a new, lightweight line out, I picked up two items for her -- the SimplyLite 2-Quart Baking Dish and the 1-1/2-Quart Casserole.

At first she was suspicious of the dishes because they are remarkably light (she pulled out some older CorningWare to show me the weight difference). I think she thought they would be very fragile. But she's used them three times now, and she says they cook and brown just like her old CW dishes. She says she didn't think the old CorningWare dishes she has used for years were heavy until she used this new line, and now the old stuff feels heavy to her. It was a nice surprise.

She really likes the tight-fitting lids, too, as she does a lot of cooking for her church and having the plastic lids is nice when transporting the dishes in her car. The dishes are dishwasher-safe, but she hasn't tried washing the lids themselves in the dishwasher yet as she has a fear the plastic might warp and no longer hold a tight fit. (I'm not saying the lids won't hold their shapes, I'm saying I'll probably never find out because she'll never find out.)

Also, as mentioned in other reviews, CorningWare says these items should not be used when broiling. I imagine that's a downer for people who would like to bake, say, enchiladas in the dish and give them a quick broil before taking them out of the oven. My mom hasn't yet complained about not being able to broil with these dishes and since she cooks all sorts of things, I'm assuming the problem isn't really too great.

It was nice to give her a cooking-related gift that she didn't even know she needed.

Casserole is lightweight, lid is not

A bit plain jane, but this casserole actually IS lighter than the traditional Corning ware casseroles, which tend to be a bit bulky. I found the thinner texture and weight of it to be almost identical to Corelle, which is very durable. However, whether this justifies the extra cost of this product, I'm not quite sure. Also, the lid appears to be the same sort of heavier glass that the original casserole lids are made from, which seems to defeat the purpose.

If one had a wrist problem or was looking for something lighter, this might fill the bill by taking off a few ounces of weight.

As far as cooking, my items seemed to cook just fine, at a similar temperature as the original Corning, which I have quite a few of.

I do like it, but the square version has a very boring and utilitarian shape. Not that your average Corning white casseroles are beautiful, but this one has a particularly "boring" look about it. Some may feel that it also has a "cheap" quality/feel due to its light weight.

But so far it is performing well.

Great, except for the lid fit and the handle

I love Corningware, its always great to cook in. So this is my review on the new SimplyLite 1 and ½ Q. casserole dish. The simply light really is light, it almost feels too light, like its so delicate you would smash it if you dropped it. Unlike the previous reviewer who dropped it on the floor, I just banged it against my cupboards a few times. No problems (Hey, we have tile floors, they could break!). So I am pretty certain it will stand up to most anything (except use on a broiler or stove top). Another great thing about Corningware is the ease of cleaning and being able to use them in the oven, microwave, etc.

The 1 and ½ size is quite small. You wouldn't really be able to cook family sized entrees in it. It might be good for some side dishes and desserts. I think the most annoying part about this product is the lid. I love glass lids, as you get to see what you are cooking, but this lid has 2 major problems. It doesn't quite fit snuggly (and since I am anal I keep spending time trying to adjust it and "Make" it fit). I wish the lid fit properly. Second, the handle is difficult to use. The edges are just not quite big enough to get a good grip on. And if you wear oven gloves, it would make it even harder.

We cooked soup in ours in the microwave, and even though the soup was steaming hot, we were able to take it out of the microwave right away with no potholders or anything.

I would prefer other colours than white.

We like this. It's light, simple and easy to clean. CorningWare maintains high quality while "losing weight", as it were. Durable, attractive, affordable! Great wedding or going to school gift.

Light Upgrade to Classic CorningWare

Having cooked with this a few times, I can report that it works as advertised and his impressively light. I've found that it performs the same as traditional ceramic bakeware.

Clean up, whether by hand or in the dishwasher, is easy.

My only complaint is about this specific model. I've found that the depth is too shallow for many applications. Had it been a half-inch deeper, it would be much more versatile.
