The peculiar antics of Laurel (Hayley Mills), an emotionally troubled young girl, are the focus of The Chalk Garden - a stately household drama set on the cliffs of the English south coast. Edith Evans plays a matriarchal grandmother who, in raising her granddaughter, has neglected her other love - a barren chalk garden. Mayhem ensues as Laurel's behavior frightens away a succession of governesses until an enigmatic one (Deborah Kerr) is hired in spite of her mysterious references. She skillfully sets about tending to the girl's reckless emotions and the pitifully failed garden. John Mills (Hayley's real-life father) plays the compassionate butler working overtime to maintain order in this unpredictable environment.

Wonderful Childhood Movie

This is one of my sister's favorite movies. She watched it every chance she could when it came on TV. She was happy to finally be able to own it. Wonderful story that brings back wonderful childhood memories. Great Movie!

Old school DRAMA! Great characters and unruly Haley Mills! I saw this when I was a kid and it made a big impression on me.
So glad it's available on DVD.

This Film Has Aged Like a Fine Wine

This film is getting a little dated, but it has aged like a fine wine. A woman with a past (Deborah Kerr) takes a job as governess for an early-teen girl (Hailey Mills) living with her grandmother and a butler, played by John Mills, Hailey's real father.

Kerr's character comes to realize the lying and stealing and other faults of the young girl is like looking through a window into her own childhood. She realizes that the girl's future will be bleak like hers was if something isn't done to save the girl from herself, and from her grandmother who means well, but is the wrong person for the girl.

This movie is one of those old smoothly acted British movies like "Witness for the Prosecution" that hums along like a Rolls Royce from start to finish.

The Chalk Garden

I loved this movie so much that I pre-ordered it before it was on dvd. ( I bought it on video for too much ), but now that it is on dvd, I gave the video to a friend. I love Hayley Mills in almost any movie and what can you said about Deborah Kerr. Thanks to Amazon!

A caution, not a warning...

...about the video qualilty of this Amazon Exclusive. It's letterboxed, not anamorphic, but the real problem is the image appears a little flat, almost compressed, with no highlights and shadows that weren't that deep. It did detract somewhat from my enjoyment of the film, but Deborah Kerr and John Mills and the story are good enough that it still rates 4 stars.
