It's no secret that sequels to classic TV specials rarely stack up--they're usually guilty of getting too fancy with characters and story lines, causing irritating fissures to form in our perceptions of the originals. Lucky for a new generation of holiday viewers, that's not the case with Frosty's Winter Wonderland. In fact, lining up a Frosty double feature at home in which the original is directly followed by the new title is a fully cringe-free proposition, thanks mostly to the down-homey, pleasant narration of Andy Griffith and the near-perfect portrayal of the Frosty we all know and love by Jackie Vernon. The Wonderland dialogue doesn't trouble itself with tiresome throwbacks, and even the plot isn't overly ambitious: Frosty, lonely at the North Pole, is bent on keeping his famous promise to the kids that he'll be back again someday, so when the news of a snowstorm in their town reaches him, he waddles off. But once the belly-whopping's run its course, he's lonely again. The children, hoping to salvage Frosty's stay with them, hit upon a solution: they'll build Frosty a wife. Crystal fits every snowman's fantasy of a dream bride, but will jealous Jack Frost sabotage their wintry wedding? For all classic Christmas special fans who harbor hopes that the fun can continue, it's worth finding out. Kids 2 and older will love the songs and the still-intact dribbles of silliness. --Tammy La Gorce

The true Frosty sequel!

I loved this special where Frosty gets married! It is in the same style of animation, with most of the same voice talents as the first. I am always annoyed that every year now they play Frosty with Frosty Returns instead of this. And didn't include this on the Frosty DVD! This is the one we want to see on the DVD!

the original production team returned for a sequel 7 years later

BACKGROUND: The 1976 cel animated real sequel to Frosty the Snowman, it is shorter than the original Frosty at half an hour format. Made 7 years after the original Frosty which was an hour long format. The character design was by Paul Coker Jr, who did the same work for the first special, so the visual continuity works very well. Frosty gets a wife named Crystal (Played by Shelley Winters). While the first show was narrated and sung by Jimmy Durante, this time we have the voice talents of Andy Griffith. The famous voice actor Paul Frees stars as Jack Frost, and the policeman. Frees was a regular at the studio and had voiced the policeman, ticket seller, and Santa in the original. Dennis Day voiced the Parson, and Jackie Vernon voiced Frosty just like he did in the original. The writer is Romeo Muller, just like the original and Maury Laws returned as the musical director. There are no original songs this time out, as Christmas standards are used instead. Oh, there is another film out there called "Frosty Returns" that is marketed as a sequel to the original Frosty, but it is made by another studio. It features the voices of Johnathon Winters and John Goodman, it's fun but not up to the quality of this show.

PLOT: Just like the song says, Frosty comes back again someday. Frosty returns to play with the children, but Jack Frost is envious of him. He tries to steal Frosty's magic hat. The children build Frosty a wife named Crystal according to magic instructions from Frosty. When Jack Frost finally gets Frosty, its his wife that must save him with love. They finally make friends and work together to have a long happy winter.

Very well done by Rankin/Bass Studio. Their studio has brought us such memorable holiday classics such as Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer, Year without a Santa Claus, Nestor the Long-Eared Christmas Donkey, Mad Monster Party, The Little Drummer Boy, Frosty the Snowman, Santa Claus is Coming to Town, Mouse on the Mayflower, Here Comes Peter Cottontail, Cricket on the Hearth, the Stingiest Man in Town, Jack Frost, Pinnochio's Christmas, Rudolph's Shiny New Year, the First Easter Bunny. They also made non-holiday films such as the Hobbit, Flight of Dragons, the Last Unicorn. It is incredible that one company is responsible for all those TV specials, 95% of the ones we see every year. Their work includes standard animation, stop-motion animagic, and live action. I hope this comes out on a restored DVD soon, I have bought all the other Rankin/Bass that have been released on DVD.

mirebast is right, mm6189 is partially wrong.

Don't confuse this for a second with "Frosty Returns." This is the special, narrated by Andy Griffith, in which Frosty meets and marries his beloved, Chrystal (played by Shelley Winters). It is the direct sequel to the original "Frosty the Snowman" with the same lead actor and directors.

Despite a great cast (and the former director of the "Peanuts" specials) of that other special, it is inferior. I really hate the sneaky way in which that other one has been marketed. First in its name, which seems deliberately intended, on somebody's part, to get it confused with this special, and then by having it on network TV every year and avialable on the same DVD package as the original "Frosty the Snowman." At least now this one is finally available on DVD, but not with the originaly "Forsty."

This is also one of many Rankin/Bass specials that should be watched before one sees "Rudolf and Frosty's Christmas in July." If not, then the viewer may wonder where Chrystal and their snowkids came from.

The person calling him or herself mm6189 is partially wrong because this was made in 1976. Rankin/Bass made their special about a younger-looking, nicer Jack Frost starting Groundhog Day, in the Middle Ages, in order to get his girl, in 1979. This is the "Jack Frost original." But one could interperet that he had grown bitter in the intervening centuries after losing his girl, but is shown the error of his ways, first by Chrystal, and then Parson Brown (Dennis Day). Since mm6189 is not available for direct contact from Amazon.com, this review seemed the best place to bring this matter up. This special's version of Jack Frost also appears in "Rudolf and Frosty's Christmas in July," as their friend.

Good Christmas Story

This is about a boy named Bob who goes on a canoe ride on April fools day. As a joke he pushed his friend Frosty off of the boat. Frosty died. Bob then took another ride. Frosty's ghost was there and pulled Bob into the water. It was scary but I liked it
