Wondrous - Powerful - Important

I just watched this movie again the other night for what MUST have been about the 25th time. No matter the number of viewings, this is one of those productions that doesn't lose its edge over the years - still quite a mesmerizing project. It is indeed just as timely today as Marvin Gaye's "What's Goin' On?"

The simple plot revolves around a 25-year reunion of a high school James Dean fan club. An unusually clever way to navigate between their high school years and the actual reunion is that the "flashbacks" utizlized the actual actors as opposed to looking for younger versions. To see certain emotional growths (as well as missteps) within the same character is nothing short of devastating.

In terms of gay cinema, I suggest this ranks right up there with "The Childrens' Hour" by Lillian Hellman. This film is just as powerful, thought-provoking, startling, uncomfortable, DEFINITELY liberating, and ultimately is a classic example of theatrical orgasm of the highest order.

The ensemble is quite simply impeccable. This was the first dramatic role I had EVER seen Cher in and to say I was blown away is a masterpiece of understatement. After this performance, it is most obivous that Cher is a consummate actress. Accompanied by the likes of Sandy Dennis, Cathy Bates, and the positively breath-taking performance of Karen Black and this gives you a very good idea of the caliber of the ensemble, all of whom were positively wonderful in bringing such a powerful play to the screen. Credit/kudos certainly goes to director Robert Altman for having the foresight to assemble such a powerful cast to create an unforgettable viewing experience.

I HIGHLY recommend as one of Altman's best projects as well as a profoundly important film. This most certainly should be on DVD by now!!!!

When is this coming out on DVD????

Everyone else on this forum has said it all... a SUPERB movie with an amazing cast. With all the CRAP out there being shoved down our throats on DVD, WHY is this GEM not released?!?!? It boggles my mind. I hope somebody wakes up pretty soon and gets this movie out to the massses and preserves it properly... but it seems odd, after all this time that this is, like, the ONLY movie EVER made not out on DVD... ;-)

there must be some DRAMA somewhere (translation: Lawyers fighting over screen rights, etc.) Sigh.... too bad. BB

Empty Shells

Artist, Robert Altman left me with a morbid realization and gaping wound, seeing now that much of my life is empty without the sweet sting of sarcasm, the vulgar and warped social experience that once filled my emptiness. The hurt that I used to hate now finds new meaning and a special place in my heart. As I watched "Come Back to the 5 & Dime Store Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean" I was stripped down by a storm of self-examination where I was left with only tears and a blanket for comfort.

I sat amidst the painful truth that the real reactions of others were all long gone, vanished into the folds of time. Too many years were spent drowning in worry, wondering about lost and disoriented constantly fearing how others might truly feel about me. Rather than embracing the burning heat of my critics' voices I instead negotiated more comfortable, more "plausible" surroundings. I hid alone with myself, walking solitary in the hills much of the time, but at what final cost?

The results of my false pretense, wicked shame and crippling self-appraisals may still eclipse my precious time on Earth until finally, I will certainly freeze up in the chill of these shadows I've created.

By the time I mulled through the deserted 5 and dime store at the close of this film I was convicted and sentenced by each sharp testimony heard throughout the searing script and story, messages that have called attention to my own short-sighted vanity and fears. If only I could go back to that authentic state of tension called youth, that time before I walled myself off behind so many defenses. I would certainly listen more carefully to what similar characters had said on the stage of my own past experience. I cherish the thought and freedom that I might have been able to see each of the people in my life for what they were; then maybe I too could have found time for a similar reunion charaterized by such genuine love.

Thank you to the cast who brought this melodrama to life. Thank you for opening my soul.

Needs To Be Revived on DVD

I'm glad I saved this to DVD years ago when it ran on a pay channel. It's one of my top favorites and truly a cult favorite. While the entire movie takes place in one scene, it's the dialogue that pulls you in and makes you a part of it. This is a great character study and very well done by the actresses. I give this the highest star possible.

I wish they would put this and other classics on DVD and stop putting out crap from the 2000 era for the non-generation that only appreciates reality TV. Let's see something worth purchasing on DVD versus paying for overprice cable TV with nothing but commercials and lousy programs.

DVD Please

Please release this on DVD. I have just about worn the vhs copy out. It is such an excelent miovie. It deserves being taken to the next level of mass media.
