There's something about this film that's so irresistible, despite its grandiose manipulation. Maybe because it recounts the greatest air
battle
in history, achieving the greatest aerial battle in film history. Maybe because it has such a terrific cast (Harry Andrews, Michael Caine, Trevor Howard, Curt Jurgens, Laurence Olivier, Nigel Patrick, Christopher Plummer, Michael Redgrave, Ralph Richardson, Robert Shaw, Patrick Wymark, and Edward Fox). Maybe because it's so technically well-made, thanks to the Bond team of producer Harry Saltzman and director Guy Hamilton and the great cinematographer Freddie Young. Or maybe because there is something truly riveting about watching the British kick the Nazis back to Germany. --Bill Desowitz

Battle of of Britain (Collector;s Edition)
If you owned the VHS copy of
Battle
of
Britain
like I did, this is the copy that you want to buy. Wow! What a difference in color, clarity, and sound. The additional feature of interviews with the cast and crew that played (option) while watching the film really shed light on the production and filming. I always wondered how many airplanes were real, and how many were models. Now I know.
If your into films like The Blue Max, 12 o'clock High, and The Hunters, you will want to add Battle of Britain (collector's edition) to your collection.

No "Extras" but fantastic Blu-Ray quality
I purchased the Collector's 2-Disc Edition a few weeks ago and throughly loved it, especially the Extras disc. Yesterday, I purchased the Blu-Ray disc. The Extras disc on the SD version gave so much important background information about how they were able to create and shoot all of the fantastic aerial shots with only a few airplanes and it gave great info about the actors. This movie has an all-star "A" list of British actors, and who knew that they worked for Union Scale just to help make this film? No inflated "superstar" payments! I agree that the BluRay should have come with an Extras disc. I am so glad that I had purchased the Collector's Edition previously. I watched the SD and Blu-Ray in an A-B comparison today, switching between an Upconverting DVD player and my PS3 being pumped into my Sony SXRD KDS55-A3000 TV with 1080p/120HZ, and the Blu-Ray is just so much better visually that it's hard to describe. I felt like I was standing on the grass air fields right next to the Spitfires, Hurricanes, Heinkels and ME-109's. The movie gets a 5, but not having an Extras disc downgrades the rating to a 4.

Blu Ray Release
I'm disapointed in the Blu Ray release of this movie.
Over the years I've purchased the different format release's, VHS,DVD,Collectors Editions, etc.and was looking forward to a crisp Blu Ray high definition picture.Unfortunately it seems the studio has simply released the SD DVD version with no added features.
Compare this with the Blu Ray release of ' Patton ' which is stunning.
