Compiled by Heather B. Armstrong, award-winning publisher and uber-mistress of the phenomenally popular dooce.comŽ, this hilarious and heartwarming celebration of "everything dad" features original stories from some of the country's most celebrated bloggers, including Alice Bradley (Finslippy) Doug French (Laid Off Dad), Maggie Mason (Mighty Girl), Matthew Baldwin (Defective Yeti), Sarah Brown (Que Sera Sera), and more.

From a new father's comparison of pregnancy to Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, to a mother's story of bravely surviving a husband-son infatuation with Star Wars, to the mini triumphs and tragedies of toddlerhood, this book provides a unique, no-holds-barred glimpse into the quirks and candid moments of modern dads.

Whether we relish or fear growing up to be like our fathers...whether we've inherited his nose, sense of humor, or entire value system, our dads loom large in who we are and the choices we make. Things I Learned about my Dad in Therapy touches upon the many joys and discoveries of fatherhood, one essay at a time.

Good read

I bought this book because I love Heather Armstrong's blog, not because I was feeling sentimental about fathers... However, it is a great read that made me laugh and reflect on my own relationships with the fathers in my life. It has also made me want to write my own chapter and send a copy to my dad.

Excellent Read

An excellent read. Not the usual sentimental greeting card type of stories. real people, real fathers. A must read.

slices of greatness

I enjoyed the essays written by the other authors more than Heather's essay. My favorite essay was written by the author [...] it was inspirational and life changing. I would buy this book just for the priviledge of reading her essay. It was a gem inside a book of some inttermitent mediocre writing. Overall it was worth it.

Made me appreciate my parents ... both of them!

I really enjoyed these stories, even though I'm not a parent, and my own are still rather young. I especially enjoyed the last section, written from the perspective of someone my age reflecting on the types of Dads they had and how their relationship with their fathers has changed now that they are adults too. In general, most of the essays were beautiful stories, impeccably written by very talented and creative people. Others were more difficult to read in terms of writing style.

All told, though, it was a very inspiring read, and I'm looking forward to starting my own family and watching my husband become a dad, too.

Decent read

As an avid reader of Dooce.com I had every intention of loving this book to death, what I ended up reading were a bunch of good, mild short essays that honestly didn't make me laugh out loud one single time. There are a few heartwarming ones and a few chuckles here and there, but I had higher expectations for this book and they just weren't met. Also there are a bunch of grammatical editing errors in the book as well that the more discerning eye will find annoying...My advice is to give this a read...if you get it as a gift.
