A remarkably ambitious and engrossing project, this 1978 television miniseries ran 26-and-a-half hours, cost a then-enormous $25 million, and involved 4 directors, 5 cinematographers, and somewhere in the neighborhood of 100 speaking parts. Based on James Michener's panoramic bestseller about the settling of the American West--as reflected in the history of a fictional town called Centennial, Colorado--the story begins in the late 18th century and ends with a typical 20th century conflict over land usage. Centennial, however, largely concentrates on various memorable frontiersmen, trappers, Indians, ranchers, cowboys, and farmers from long ago. Richard Chamberlain shines as the pioneer Alexander McKeag, Robert Conrad does some of his best work as French-Canadian Pasquinel, and performances by Alex Karras, Chad Everett, Sally Kellerman, Raymond Burr, Richard Crenna, David Janssen, and Dennis Weaver effectively add to a tapestry of adventure, tragedy, violence, and dubious Western progress. Produced at a time when TV networks were in the throes of acknowledging America's history of racial injustice, the program paints a starkly villainous portrait of opportunists exploiting and destroying Indians in the name of manifest destiny. While the project's great length might make one wary of diving in, Centennial is the sort of carefully paced drama that makes one care about the intertwined destinies of unique characters and how they illuminate America's past. --Tom Keogh

Centennial - Possibly the Best Miniseries Ever Made

Centennial, a miniseries based on Michener's book of the same name, is a sweeping saga of the American West and is, IMO, quite possibly the best miniseries ever put on film. The all-star cast doesn't disappoint, from Richard Chamberlain to Andy Griffith, and from Barbara Carrera to Sally Kellerman. The story is uniquely American, the cinematography makes the landscape another character in the tale, and the cast is like a necklace of many shining pearls. I enjoyed the series in it's original TV airing, on VHS when tapes were released, and now on DVD - a release I eagerly awaited. Don't miss this one.

CENTENNIAL - THE COMPLETE SERIES (DVD)

In my opinion this work is one of the all time best. Michener's genius cannot be denied. If you were like me - and watched the original - you could not wait for it to be re-released. I placed my order almost a year before distribution date.

This DVD series does not disappoint. One of the greatest epics ever produced. Tremendous cast of actors. There is a portion of one DVD which contains interviews with the main actors discussing the "making of".

If you care about the origins of our country and the people who first blazed the trails for the rest of our ancestors to follow --you will want to own and watch this (over and over).

I can guarantee you will never regret the addition of this work to your video library. A MUST SEE AND A MUST HAVE.

Fabulous Series!

Although I've had this series in VHS tapes for years, I pre-ordered the DVD version as soon as it was available for ordering and could hardly wait to get it. The wait was totally worth it! The quality of the picture on the DVD version is awesome, especially when compared with the VHS tapes.

The story takes place in a fictional location in Colorado and the scenery is magnificient. The acting is very well done; of course, anything with Robert Conrad, Richard Chamberlain and Vanessa Redgrave, just to name a few, is bound to be good. The series covers virtually every aspect of the West, from the earliest traders, to the settlers, the cowboys, the cattle barons and the farmers, together with the conflict between the two ways of lift, to the immigrants and the tragic fate of many of the American Indians, with a little mystery thrown in to carry the story forward to the present (or at least the present when the film was shot).

I love this series and would highly recommend it to anyone who loves movies about the history of the settlement of the West or anyone who loves Lonesome Dove.

Centennial

The boxed set of this TV miniseries is really a nice addition to any DVD library. The case is lovely and could sit on any book shelf in even the most formal home.

Michner's Classic in DVD

James Michner's classic shines in its new DVD format. I had purchased the series in VHS format a number of years ago and was delighted to see it now in DVD format. A truly great miniseries with an equally great cast of stars.
