What happens when a widowed mother and her two sons invite an injured drifter into their home? Put aside those modern, jaded visions of a psychotic killer on the rampage and enter the gentler, yet extremely rigid world of 1955 Suburbia USA. Jeanne Holman has lost her husband to the Korean War and is doing her best to support her family in a community that reveres conformity and frowns upon anyone who dares to be different. As Jeanne questions her chosen path, her oldest son Tom struggles to fit in with his peers and her youngest son, Gunny, who's frightened of virtually everything, is soon to be diagnosed with a serious illness. Enter a chance encounter with drifter Jack McCloud and his dog Betty Jane, and the pair temporarily move in with the Holman family. What essentially begins as one woman's act of guilt-induced charity evolves into a magical journey of personal growth for each family member. The end result is a wish come true for everyone involved. This film has widespread appeal: there's romance, magic, physical and spiritual journeys, self-revelation, and even a celebration of diversity and personal strength. Joe Mazzello is the Genius of this Film

I own this film and have seen it 3 times. So WHY, after a plethora of reviewers, do I now write a review? The answer is simple: Joe Mazzello.
Before I elaborate, I must give credit to Patrick Swayze, and to Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio. They had moments in the film that were spectacular in all candor. No one doubts their talents, and this movie further supports my assertion.

But, back to Joe Mazzello. Joe is a 1990s and 21st Century acting phenomenon. He always gives 110% and I am almost certain that ALL of his takes are almost indistinguishable due to their consistency. He is THAT good, and this movie shows it. I believe that this movie was the FIRST REAL showing of his genuine capabilities ... capabilities elaborated upon and confirmed in 1997's "Star Kid" and in 1998's "Simon Birch."
I swear, Joe's portrayal was so convincing, that by the movie's end I vicariously wanted to buy an old-style bicycle, don a tee shirt, jeans and tennis shoes, and head to the field and play some baseball!
Joe Mazzello's motto about acting is this: "Just make it look REAL!"
And Joe made it look real in "Three Wishes." So, how do I know? I remember watching the Mickey Mouse Club on TV, in the 1950s. Joe was as real as it gets.

Excellent family film

This is a very powerful film with an excellent message. Know what is really important in life and never give up. Patrick Swayze plays a drifter with the power to grant wishes. Swayze does a great job in this film and makes his character fairly realistic. Joseph Mazzello (The Tissue King) puts his best foot forward showing why he's cast in so many tear jerkers. I love this film and have it in my collection.

More movies should have such integrity

This is a delightful movie. Not slick. So much feeling and some
delightful imagination. Wonderful morals. Good acting.
Great nostalgia for those of us who grew up in 50's/60's.

Patrick Swayze returns to grant Three Wishes!!

This is one of Patrick's best light hearted movies.
You have a family in need of a husband & father.
Patrick fills the role, until the father comes home from
tha war. The father went off to be a soldier, it was during
WWII. The father finally comes home from the war, and the oldest
son finds out once he become a father that JACK(Patrick) was a
soldier that had died in the war back when he was a kid.
I rate this movie a 9 from 1to10!!

Good movie with some downfalls

OK, to get things straight, the only reason i ever bought this movies was Joseph Mazzello's name on the front.
This actor, as always, gives a stunning performance, and is a reason u should view this movie. Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio gives a good performance also a struggling single mother. The script starts really nice and promising,
with some intelligent thoughts combined with funny moments, however, by the time it ends you start wondering what's the point.
The end, in my opinion (although maybe i'm way too cynical and therefore subjective) is not satisfactory. It clearly addresses the child in you,
it's just that it address to the 4 years old child. This is after all a family movie, the one to watch with your kids in a nice cozy living room in the afternoon
when there is nothing else better to do. The problem is i'm not sure kids would really wanna go through the first half of the film (although u will) and by the time it reaches the end, addressing the child that was supposed to watch it, u suddenly feel dumb for even sticking with the whole story.
However, if u disregard the end and imagine Tom meeting and old Jack, this movie could be quite enjoyable.
The other problem is Patrick Swayze. Now, I haven't seen other movies he starred in, but here... Makes me wonder whether he's a good actor. Maybe he just wasn't for the part, because i can't sence chemistry between him and Ms. Mastrantonio, let alone with Joseph Mazzello (on which chemistry the film is supposed to rely upon). He just doesn't fit the part. But again, if you disregard this also, you draw something out of this film.
As I said it's worth buying just to have this in your Joseph Mazzello collection, because the ending scene, with 12 years old Tom riding the bicycle
where the main character departs, is heart-breaking. How a 12 year old child (supposing he was 12 then because it looks like that)
can pull that off is beyond me. I think we can expect great things from him. The kid that plays his brother is overall cute,
which is exactly what he's supposed to do throughout the film - make u feel sympathetic towards him, so no objection there.
And the third problem is the score. Quite frankly, the stupidest music i've ever heard. So as I said if you're a fan of Mr. Mazzello get this movie, if not, well then what r u waiting for, but start with something different like the Cure or Simon Birch. And if you are a fan of Mr. Swayze...I do have to ask why?
