It?s said if you want to succeed, watch successful people and do what they do.
Simply
Irresistible
is a humorous
man
ual of case studies that show how the greatest
siren
s of
history
did what they did and got what they wanted, nearly all the time. Our role models-m
any
of whom are still weaving their charms today- include Eva Peron, Greta Garbo, Coco Chanel, Nigella Lawson, Angelina Jolie, Edith Piaf, Lucretia Borgia, Anne Boleyn, Mata Hari, and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. Simply Irresistible gives practical, sexy, and sometimes downright outrageous advice on modern seduction. It exalts the siren archetypes of the Companion, Competitor, Goddess, Mother, and Sex Kitten. The cheeky histories of the iconic real-life
women
are paired with a fun array of quizzes, quotes, photos, tongue-in-cheek captions, and personal stories of triumph and tragedy. (Mata Hari and Anne Boleyn were, after all, both executed.) The wisdom of these
famous
sirens is fleshed out with the contributions of everyday, lesser known charismatic women. The conclusion? All women have an
inner
siren-the ability to bring men to their knees-just waiting to come out. Now they?ll know how.

Some history not found in the history books or feminism of a different form
The
siren
-style of wo
man
is one that is admired, hated, gossiped about, loved deeply
from
both near and far and often envied, sometimes all at once by the same person. At no times are they ever ignored. This book describes some of the
most
famous
women
of this type down through
history
. Other than being a siren, the characteristics of these women cover a wide swath of different types.
There are queens and empresses, such as Elizabeth I of England, Cleopatra of Egypt and Catherine the Great of Russia. Some are actresses such as Mae West, Greta Garbo, Marilyn Monroe, Angelina Jolie, Carole Lombard and Susan Sarandon. Others pursued wealth and power at all costs, for example Evita Peron, Camilla Parker-Bowles, Pamela Harriman and Lady Randolph Churchill all pursued and captured men at high levels of political power. Finally, some were prostitutes and frauds, such as Mata Hari and Ninon de Lenclos, although the proper term for the higher-class sex worker was courtesan. They were women who provided quality companionship and conversation as well as sex.
Whatever category you would put them in, they were all women who altered and went contrary to the society they found themselves in. Looked at another way, most could be described as feminists, because they insisted that women could do what they want, social norms notwithstanding. In m
any
cases, these women had many lovers and they made no secret of it, wearing it as a badge of honor and pride. Pamela Harriman summed it up when she said, "I would rather have bad things written about me than be forgotten."
This is not a book for someone who harbors a chauvinistic attitude towards the role of women, independent of their gender. However, if you are interested in some of the most dynamic, energetic and interesting women in history, then this book will fascinate you. It certainly generated that reaction in me.

Superb!!
I wish I would've had this as a guide
man
y years ago, although, it's still not too late. It's truly amazing!!!
Very mixed on this book
As a summer read, I can recommend this title. However, in the beginning the author describes the book as her thesis on
Siren
s. That prepared me to expect a different kind of book, a more academic approach, which it was not.
Some of White's Sirens are favorites of mine: Monroe (in spite of her untimely death), Garbo to name a couple. Some were unknown to me, the French courtesans for example. Still others I had to wonder at her choice such as Edith Piaf who's ending was very sad. I think a Siren is someone who succeeds to the end. It is the men who are dashed upon the rocks by the Siren song not the Sirens. Two that should have been included: Audrey and Katherine Hepburn. I believe the "never complain, never explain" quote belongs to Katherine H. not the Siren White credits.
Writing style: I was disappointed. As the book wore on I became a bit bored. The writing was random, sloppy and didn't have much direction. Her "girlfriend" speak comes off as decidedly not Siren.
To sum up, the subject matter and idea of a book on Sirens is excellent just not executed terribly well by the author. I did enjoy the art. If you don't read it cover to cover like I did it can be entertaining.
