John Singleton, at the age of 23, was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for his debut film,
Boyz
N the
Hood
. The film stars Laurence Fishburne, Angela Basset, Ice Cube, and Academy Award-winning actor Cuba Gooding Jr. in his first starring role in a feature film. Gooding plays Tre Styles, a teenager growing up in South Central Los Angeles. His father, Furious (Fishburne), is divorced and living away from Tre and his mother (Basset), but he's still involved in Tre's upbringing, teaching him the values of right and wrong and responsibility. Meanwhile, Tre's childhood buddies Ricky (Morris Chestnut) and Doughboy (Ice Cube) are living their lives in terms of the epidemic of violence and poverty that has plagued their neighborhood. Ricky, a talented football player, strives to get a full athletic scholarship to college. If only his SAT scores were higher. Doughboy lives a life full of crime but still remains true to his friends. The obstacles that these three young men come across result in dire consequences, devastatingly avoidable and inevitable at the same time. Boyz N the Hood is a landmark film beyond its commercial success, presenting a portrait of South Central in the late '80s and early '90s as painted by Singleton (who grew up in that neighborhood), achieving accuracy and dramatic resonance in this story of at-risk youth. --Shannon Gee

Which Path Would You Take?
Boyz
N The
Hood
is considered by many as the definitive "Hood" movie and is even more astounding to learn that Writer & Director John Singleton was only 23 when this was released. The greatest aspect of this movie is that it's a film about acceptance when focusing around the main character Tré. He's a representative for those of us who have all told lies about our lives simply to fit in with the crowd. We can all relate to the Tré character which is what is easily one of the main reasons for this films popularity.
Set in South Central L.A. "Boyz N The Hood" focuses around three friends with very different aspirations in life.
"Doughboy" played by Ice Cube is a man who's become the typical kid growing up in the hood and succumbed to the Drink, Drugs and crime.
"Ricky Baker" played by Morris Chestnut is the all American athlete who's looking to win a sports scholarship to USC and make something of his life.
"Tré Styles" played by Cube Gooding Jr. is the kid in the middle being pulled by both sides. Tré is lucky enough to have a father who's showing him to do what is right and always take responsibility for his actions.
In this film, while in the hood with his old school friends, Tré is seriously confused about where his life is going. Although his father is teaching him about the right way to live his life, Tré is being pulled by "Doughboy" to follow the hood lifestyle which is glorified by "Doughboys" code of honour. This is truly realistic piece and as an early role for both Ice Cube and Cuba Gooding this was a great way to start an acting career. This is easily Singletons greatest work with which he has yet to gain the same level of success. It's an enjoyable movie that every film fan can sit and watch all the way through. This isn't a typical genre specific movie, so if you're not usually a fan of the "Hood" type movies then don't worry it's not the typical "Hood" movie

is a cinematic tour deforce. John Singelton has made an improtant film that every young man can realte to no matter what his ethnic background. I first remeber going to see Boyz N the Hood with my stepfather when I was ten years and even a child I understood the message behind the film. John Singleton's Oscar nomination for Best Director at the age of 24 makes him the youngest director to ever receive such an accolade, beating Orson Welles by a good 2 years and it was well earned. The acting in the film was very strong and all of the actors would gone on to finer things. Boyz N the Hood is a classic film that stood the test of the time.
